There has been a lot of speculation that the DI barracks as seen by Sun and Frank was an alternate future that was created through the interaction of the 815ers with the DI in 1977. The evidence for this is from the look of the barracks (deteriorated as if no one has lived there for decades and the hanging sign.) I don't believe we are seeing an alternate future here, and here's why:
1) The barracks we are accustomed to seeing have always bothered me. Beginning with the overhead sequence in 3.01 ATOTC, the barracks have looked far too small to support the massive amount of people involved in the DI. This suggests to me that there are other barracks, perhaps pockets of them around the island.
2) The runway. If this had been an alternate future where the others did not live in the barracks, I find it highly unlikely that the others were even around (where were they living if not in the barracks?) If this is the case, then who would have been there to make Sawyer and Kate build the runway?
3) The outriggers. How would Ben have known about the outriggers if he had set them up in one timeline, but arrived in a different one?
4) The smoke monster. Sun and Frank hear the smoke monster just before they enter the forest. We do not see them pass through any pylons. This suggests that either
a) The DI only built pylons around part of the barracks, completely making them useless as a defense against the hostiles and smokey (although the pylons could have gone all the way to the water line, still keeping out smokey and he was only heard because the pylons were off. This however, would not stop the hostiles because as far as we know they are not afraid of water. I'm not going to get into the Wizard of OZ/ wicked witch reference right now, though)
or
b) the culmination of my theory, that Sun and Frank merely stumbled upon a second barracks that was not protected by the pylons. This barracks was very close to the dock and could very easily have been used for bringing in the new recruits. This would make sense that they would process the people BEFORE bringing them through the pylons to the actual living area.
