I have read many theories and ideas about how the survivors could change the future by not saving Amy, or preventing The Purge, or anything that we know happened. I think the perception of time is what confuses most people. We saw 2004-2007 first in the series, and now we are seeing 1974-1977. That is the confusion that makes people believe that things can be changed. I am a firm believe in "Whatever Happened, Happened" so I don't believe anything will be changed.
*Desmond is the exception.*
Daniel said it himself that Desmond is the anomaly. At some point he will do something that will change the future. This means that Desmond will end up on the island in the past or the past will reach 2001 when he was in the hatch. He is the key to this whole time loop, but not one single person other than Desmond can change a thing!
So with that being said, we, as viewers, are seeing the past HOW IT HAPPENED! We aren't seeing the same time line that we have been seeing. Yeah the survivors have the knowledge of the future and blah blah, but just like Sayid did not kill little Ben, WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED! We cannot watch these episodes and think that, "Oh, Sawyer should try to prevent the Purge now that they are in '77!" What we should be thinking is, "I wonder how, or if, the survivors survive the Purge?" We are viewing the past and how the 2004 island came to be, not another chance for the survivors to change anything about the future. Even the attempt on young Ben's life happened. There's nothing new about it!
