Lost is about conflict. We're lead to believe this guy is the good guy. No, wait, this guy is the bad guy. Hold on, this guy right here is the bad guy. What if we're focusing on the wrong conflict?
Basically, my theory is that Lost is currently dancing around the real conflict: Richard vs. Jacob. Everyone else are just pawns in this battle.
Richard claims to pick the leaders. Richard gave Locke the tests and gave him the file on Sawyer. Richard finds and presumably recruits Ben. Even while Ben is calling the shots, Richard is the one who is making the "smaller" decisions. Ben gets one or two big ones to make him feel good.
My theory is that at some point Richard and Jacob existed together. There was conflict, and Jacob lost. He was trapped in whatever hell Richard caught him in. Richard has been maipulating all of the survivors, Hostiles, Others, Dharma, whoever to keep Jacob trapped and move into his end game. Yes, he pretends Jacob is all powerful, or watch, or whatever, but what better way to hide your enemy than to "speak" for him. Suddenly, Richard gets blamed for squat. Jacob gets the blame for everything.
Until, of course, Richard's end game is revealed.
