I think Desmond's time travel is fundamentally different from the Losties, and I think I can prove it. When the losties time travel, their entire body is moved. I think Desmond only moves his mind.
When the losties jump, whatever they are touching comes with them. They keep the same clothes, the same injuries, its still them, they were just moved. Sawyer holds the rope, it jumps too. The canoe also jumped.
When Desmond goes back in his first time flash, he is wearing a different set of clothes when he goes to buy the ring from Hawking. When Desmond flashes to different times, he gets different outfits. When he flashes back to the Island, he is butt naked.
Desmond's mind was flashing, not his body! His consciousness was time travelling, but the period he went to replaced his current consciousness. This is why when he takes the helicopter and flashes he can't remember anyone, its 1992 Desmond.
I also think this is why Desmond is special. Whatever the losties do, they have already done, because they were there the first time. It would be different if they time jumped and they were already a part of Dharma, but they woke up in the jungle. Their whole bodies jumped.
Desmond is the only one who can change "what happened" because he's the only one who can travel with his mind, not just his body. I think that in 1977, a few people learned the Losties were time travellers, namely Widmore, Hawking, and Ben. Widmore had Faraday and Hawking researching a way to send someone's consciousness back in time, but not their body, so that they could change the past. The answer was the failsafe key.
Desmond has already changed what was supposed to happen. Ben was surprised to learn of his boat, and was shocked to hear Charlie was down in the Looking Glass (Charlie Pace is in the looking glass?!?). Ben realized that Widmore "changed the rules".
What if Ben has his own agent who he is attempting to create? A "Desmond" who could also transfer consciousness and change the past? We could see two competing factions trying to change time! I like this one a lot :) Theory by ivey_driveshaft
