Marrow of Many Theories (Q&A)
Here is the marrow—the nutrient-rich center—of many theories (posted here and elsewhere) that I have put together concerning current events on LOST. In Q&A format. I am mostly concerned with "who-did-what-and-why," rather than "who-is-the-statue-of" or "what-or-who-is-Richard," etc.
Q: People say Sun can't be in 1977. Why?
A: Sun would have been dead from being pregnant; the only reason she's not dead is that they were rescued, which was not SUPPOSED to happen—something everyone agrees on.
Q: Who is this "everyone" who agrees that the 06 never should have been rescued?
A: Let's see… Ben, Widmore, Hawking, Locke, Jack, Hurley…
Q: Is that really "everyone?"
A: Not really. Kate and Sayid, at least, don't seem to think that the rescue was the wrong move.
Q: Fine, almost everyone agrees. Then WHY wasn't it supposed to happen?
A: There are many theories. But the bottom line is: because it DIDN'T happen.
Q: Okay, then why DID it happen?
A: Because Desmond, who apparently can transcend (or bend) the rules, saved Charlie.
Q: Why?
A: Because Desmond's a nice guy. He didn't want his buddy to drown, get hit by lightning, fall off a rock, or get impaled by an arrow. So he saved Charlie enough times that eventually his actions screwed up the timeline.
Q: Why did saving Charlie lead to the "not supposed to happen" event happening—the 06 getting rescued?
A: Had Charlie been dead—had Desmond not changed the rules—then someone else would have tried to turn off the jamming signal, but would have likely failed: the code was "Good Vibrations" which Charlie, the musician, knew. Without having the jamming signal turned off, the boat people might have captured Ben (or might have died trying) but the 06 would never have gotten off the Island, and Penny would never have known Desmond was alive on the Island to send her rescue boat.
Q: And HOW could Desmond defy fate, how could he change the timeline?
A: He could see the future; he is special. But there's a better question you should ask.
Q: What?
A: You should ask, "Why was Desmond there, on the Island, in the first place?" Had Desmond not been on the Island, then he wouldn't have been able to save Charlie and change what was supposed to happen, and the 06 would never have gotten off the Island, and not gone DIRECTLY back to 1974 with Locke and the other left-behind-flashers.
Q: Okay, so why was Desmond on the Island?
A: Because Libby gave him a boat.
Q: Why did Libby give Desmond a boat?
A: Not sure… maybe because she's nice?
Q: Doesn't that seem like a coincidence?
A: It sure does. It seems more like Widmore wanted Desmond on that island, because Desmond being there would give Widmore the chance to get back to it. But that seems like too much of a coincidence to BE a coincidence. And Libby being on the plane, AND in the funny farm, is too much of a coincidence to merely be a coincidence.
Q: So what does that mean?
A: Libby was probably working for Widmore, whether or not she knew it.
Q: Holy crap! What does THAT mean?
A: It means that if ONE person on the plane was an agent of Widmore, then others could be, too.
Q: Couldn't Ben have had agents on the plane?
A: It's possible; he may have engineered Claire's being on the plane—but if he did that, why would he need to send Goodwin and Ethan to infiltrate both camps?
Q: Now YOU are asking the questions.
A: See what LOST does to you?
Q: How does this tie back to Sun again?
A: If Desmond hadn't changed things, the 06 never would have been rescued. Sun would have died on the Island, of her pregnancy. So she couldn't have gone back in time to 1974 with everyone else.
Q: But everyone else didn't go back to 1974.
A: Because they left the Island; they were ALL supposed to go back to 1974. Now they have returned, and everything, more or less, is as it should be. Or as it was supposed to be.
Q: And why did they go back to 1974?
A: Because the Island was moved, causing everyone on it to jump through time, until Locke stopped the time jumps by fixing the wheel... the wheel THAT BEN BROKE when he turned it.
Q: Why did Ben turn the wheel?
A: To move the Island.
Q: Why did the Island have to be moved?
A: To hide it from Widmore. Even without Charlie un-jamming the Looking Glass, Widmore knew where the Island was and would send another boat. So the Island needed to not be there anymore.
Q: So this would have happened anyway? Whether or not the 06 left, Widmore would have known where the Island was, and they would have had to move it, and the ENTIRE group of 815 survivors would have been jumping in time with Locke, Sawyer, etc. and would have ended up back in 1974?
A: Yes. Simple, isn't it?
Q: No. But basically, because of Desmond, the events from the finale of season 3 (after Charlie turns off the jamming signal) through season 4 and up through the first half of season 5 (so far) have been events required to "course-correct" to get everything back to where it would have been w/o Desmond's mucking up the timeline... which he did because he's a nice guy and wanted to save Charlie?
A: Yes. Simple, isn't it?
Q: Then Desmond wasn't supposed to leave, either, and he's supposed to be back on the Island, too. Right? A: Hmmm... maybe... he wasn't on 815, plus he's special, so ... Q: And why didn't Ben go after Desmond??? A: Well, I'm not sure, maybe Ben doesn't know, or because Desmond is special, he can't... Q: And wouldn't Sun have jumped in time with them, only jumped while pregnant? A: Um, yeah, but if time-issues are what cause pregnant women to die, then she would have died with the first jump... she would have died by 1977 anyway… maybe… though, maybe her kid isn't supposed to be alive… I'm not… Q: Stop rambling. Ellie said that the Island wasn't "done" with Desmond, right? A: Actually, it was Mrs. Hawking, but she's probably also Ellie, and... Q: What if Locke had moved the Island, not ben, like Jacob apparently wanted? A: Then, perhaps, it would have been done properly and the time-jumping-flashing wouldn't have happened. Q: Would Locke still have had to go retrieve ! the 06 if that happened? A: Probably. Q: But Charlotte is dead because of the flashing, so if everything had happened properly, wouldn't she still be alive? A: It's possible. That may be what Daniel realizes, that if he restores the RIGHT timeline, Charlotte won't be dead. Q: Will that work? A: Probably not. Q: And who died in the boat. A: What boat? Q: The outrigger. The second one. When it's chasing the flashing people, and firing on them, Juliet shoots back and hits one of them. A: Maybe it's not a fatal hit. Q: It's a head shot! A: Okay, well, that was probably a boat full of Caesar's people, so maybe one of them, or maybe Sun was with them, and it was her. Q: You're saying Juliet may have killed Sun? A: This is LOST. It's possible. Theory by Kirbyjon
