The producers have been jamming Desmonds brother line down our throats for years now. Recently I have started to think its more than just a cheery fan loving line.
Desmond and Jack are brothers. Why cant this be possible? We know that Christian had an affair in Australia and had Claire, why couldnt he have done the same before that in the UK?
Jack is the first character Desmond calls "brotha" when they meet while working out at the stadium.
Another interesting line from that scene is when Desmond tells jack "I was almost a doctor once". Hmm??
According to lostpedia:
"Not much is known about Desmond's early life. Desmond did not graduate from university because he had to support his three brothers after something happened involving his father. The cause of the elder Hume's departure remains unknown"
Also, as far as Christians past is concerned, (also from lostpedia):
"Sometime in his young life, Christian began dating a woman named Margo. He eventually proposed to her, but Christian's father told him on his wedding day that he disapproved of their union"
Perhaps his father did not approve because he was already involved with a woman from Scotland. He fell in love with Jacks mom and took off leaving Desmond. Why else would he disapprove if not that he was abandoning a child.
So.....if its true that they are brothers, what does that mean?
It would further the idea that there is something special about either the Shepard family, or the Shepard family line in some way.
Could explain why Widmore was so against him being with Penny. (with his resources and knowledge of the island there is no way he wouldnt know who Des' father was). Which would also mean that Widmore thinks something of the Shepards we dont know yet (funny how we have seen or heard of no interaction between Widmore and Jack at all, not even them talking about each other).
