Bear with me.
I think that Daniel is Jacob.
I'm not sure if it has mentiond here before, I did check but couldn't find anything, so sorry if I am repeating anything.
Firstly, there is the Faraday Number (or constant) which is a scientific term in electrochemistry.
" The Faraday Number (or constant) gives the amount of electrical charge needed to change one gram-equivalent of substance by electrochemical reaction."
Remember when Charlotte said that HE had told her not to come back but described him as an old man, well that got me thinking.
What if he becomes Jacob by being the one to ensure that the two sets of Losties finally end up back in the same time (ie 2007). And the result of what he does means that he sort of dies but not really - he ends up being trapped in an electromagnetic dimension of some sort, like a Farady cage. see here: http://knowledgerush.com/kr/encyclopedia/Faraday_cage/ and you can see it on Lostpedia. What if Jacob's cabin is the cage which is why it needed ash around it, either to protect it, or to keep Jacob in, see here: http://www.structureindia.net/gel-earthing-electrode.html
We know Jacob looks like an older man with slightly long hair (which everyone thinks is christian) but what if it is an older Daniel? Maybe he was able to communicate with Charlotte wich is why she didn't recognise *Daniel* as him, straight away, but then the truth dawned.
This could also be why Daniel knows so much about what is actually going on, he knew the island was jumping and he kind of knows some of the implications but he hasn't fully become Jacob yet so doesn't know everything. He has also experienced quite a bit of memory loss to the point that maybe when he is Jacob he doesn't remember being Daniel.
Also, on the freighter Daniel wants to help his patients and Ray says something like, Daniel can't even help himself. And what did Jacob say to Locke - HELP ME. Daniel is stuck as Jacob in the cabin and needs help to get out.
I know there are flaws with this theory ie how did he get back off the island.
BUT what if we are looking at everything in reverse? Maybe the true LOST story starts with the final episode and we will need to watch each episode in the opposite order??? for it all to make sense - now THAT would be a twist !
