Who is Jacob ? A chair moving on its own, jars on the window full with liquid, a picture of a terrier - all in a cabin surrounded by sand; his words to John "Save me", his hate towards technology,his list, and most of all, the respect which the Others have towards him.
If we want to understand who Jacob is we have to look in some of the mysteries of LOST - the island,the time, the end of the world,the Others, Smokey , etc.
I will write about the character and idea of Jacob with two people having this name. John Jacob Astor (1763 - 1848) and his grandson John Jacob Asto IV (1864 - 1912). John Jacob Astor was the richest person in America back then. He traded animal skin and had contacts with Daniel Boon and other interesting people,and after that he bought land in Manhaton. On his bed,before dying,he only regreted that he didnt buy more of Manhaton. His name comes from Wolford Astoria and Astoria,Oregon - 2 hours from Portland.
John Jacob Astor IV continued with his grandad business.He also wrote the book "Travelling in different worlds". This popular book has a lot of ideas,based on the magnetism - for example magnetic eye.
"The human soul can never die.The reveal of the soul is the ghost.The identity,consciousness and will live forever, too. Before you can see me with your eyes.I , through , my will describe material identities under the form of the gases of the Earth,water or the air around me.They take the form I want them to - it doesnt have to be a human one... Through my will , I combine and concentrate those gases ( who are mainly oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon ) into flesh ,blood ,water and everything else."

Our most complexic and very well developed sense ,which we call intuation or premontion, which we still learn about and try to make it perfect.When we close our eyes it shows us space or other bodies which are coming towards us, or what happens on the other side of the planet.It also shows us to look into the future or the past."

"We absorb the energy of life" - answers the Ghost."We absorb the magnetism and electricity from the air ,very easily.Actually we feel little pleasure from taking this power,during magnetical disturbances there is unlimited amount of food for the immortals.If we try to resist then the tension will be bigger and we will eat withouth wanting to.We are part of unlimited univers and there is no thirst or hunger that we cant satisfy."
The magnetic food of the so called "ghosts" ,from which there is plenty on the island.The ghost converts to scenes and people from memories. The island is inhabited with those conscious no-body creatures,one of whom is Jacob - he is powerful enough to take different forms and carry out his ilusions ,taking information from the people's memories.
WHO IS CEBER OR THE BLACK SMOKE ? A HUMAN GHOST ? No,Ceber is Jacob's dog... The first track is the name which the dog with three heads from the Greek mithology has.Other thing is the monsterous way which the Black Smoke acts. Chasing and hurting people ,big noise where it shows. In the end of Season 3 we see the Black Smoke ( or Jacob's dog) to lay around Jacob's cabin.Overcoming his fear,Ben steps over the sand line which surrounds the cabin and Locke stops to smell the substance.The sleeping dog lays - this is Ceber,waiting for his master Jacob, like a loyal dog.Inside the cabin there is also a big portrait of how Ceber looked like.
But why does Ceber look like a Black Smoke and not a dog? When Jacob realised that he can give a form of his mind - centuries after his physical death ,the first thing he did is to call his dog.But dogs are that stable like a human soul to jump from the world of the ghosts to the material world . Jacob needed an enviroment in which Ceber to declare its physical presence.He used a black rock. The smacking of a magnetic rock in a sand insured Ceber enough material to form into a physical condition.Unfortunatley,Ceber doesnt have memories of his look and size to get his real form.He cant remember his dog form well enough to form it back . The poor dog cant even remember how to bark - because it doesnt have a white lung and a mouth. Ceber remembers the impressions and the monsterus noise from the home in Manhaton,not the barking but the Underground Tube ,the trams and the noise of the streets, centuries ago . There are privileges for losing its dog form ,for example ,Ceber or Sm! okey , can fly with amazing speed in an electromagnetic field on the Island and to practise big physical power to defend its master - JACOB.
