Ok, to sum it up... an incident occurred on the island that leads to the release of ancient egyptian deities Seth and Horus. The temple we see (when Jin and Rousseau are talking) had protected these deities from ever being released but somehow they have now escaped and are battling to control civilization.
Horus represents Ben, and Seth represents Charles Widmore, and they are both in battle for the right to control the island... which I believe will be the beginning of civilization. Every action is causing a change in history, despite what you think Elouise Hawking claims about that... it's all a trick so that she can help control what she wants to happen or how she wants history to be. I think she will end up eventually being the mother or grandmother to these egyptian gods... and I'm almost under the impression that there are more than just 2 gods that have been resurrected.
The skeletons on the island are Adam and Eve and Bens purpose is to ensure that they create the human race and our world. Widmore, on the other hand is trying to prevent this and take their souls and control them in the underworld.
I believe that the foot of the statue represents one egyptian god, while the actual statue represents another... bringing me back to one being Seth, and one being Horus. Depending on certain actions, the statue will eventually be constructed to represent one god or another. We just don't know how it will turn out, or how it's supposed to turn out.
The purpose of lost is to make sure that the CORRECT god is representing the island so that Adam and Eve or whoever will represent them... will eventually ensure that civilization begins. I think civilization starts over after a certain amount of time and each time there is a battle to see if we will survive or if the world will end.
I know this isn't much, but the more I'm reading about Egyptian Mythology, the more things start to connect and make sense. One thing we can all agree on is that ancient Egyptian mythology plays a HUGE part in this... why else would hurley paint the Sphinx (which had 4 toes), if he were not some kind of descendant or reincarnation of an ancient god or deity. He just doesn't know it yet! He paints it because he was there in another lifetime! ha-ha. This stuff blows my mind, I'm sure many feel the same way. What a great show huh? to give us so many different theories, and we can't quite prove any of them! Theory by The Thinker
