The size of the statue on the island suggests an interesting theory. There has been no indication that there is a quarry on the island from which to cut out stones for building a statue of this size, therefore the stones must have come from somewhere else. In Dharma days, provisions to the island came from a submarine, but the statue was built way way pre-Dharma. It is possible that a wormhole entrance to the island previously existed in some highly accessible spot where large stones could be shoved through (and has possibly ceased to exist since), but perhaps a better explanation is that the island has only started moving in the years since the statue was built.
I think one key to understanding the island is to understand the very nature of volcanic activity. If the island is geologically anything like the Hawaiian islands, then it is situated above a hotspot, a fracture in the mantle of the earth that leaks. This causes the gradual buildup of the island from the ocean floor. A hotspot also fits another aspect of the island very well. Let's suppose that the exotic matter that fuels time travel was at one point stuck in the mantle of the earth, for all purposes latent. It was originally created over millenia as the earth cooled and would have stayed put except for being located by this geological hot spot. So, magma flows to the surface over thousands of years, pushing it's way up, and soon this exotic matter coalesces in the basalt underbelly of the island. At a certain point, enough of the exotic matter is present that it brings about the temporal instability that currently afflicts the island.
This instability only happens after the island has originally been settled. It is settled by Latin-speaking Egyptians who trade goods with other Polynesian islands (including one with a quarry). Then one day, the island starts skipping in time and the only way off the island is through gradually discovered worm holes. The people who get off start spreading the legends of the island skipping in time and then the search for the island is on.Theory by slothrop
