Hi Lads,
I love Lost, and I have spend ages trying to figure out what's going on each episode. As a first time poster this here are my rambling thoughts…
The Island is raw energy it is akin to a cosmic centre point for electromagnetism. The energy is so focused and dense that the island itself acts as a giant magnet, a really GIANT magnet that can bend space-time.
The island has existed forever and will exist forever! As we know energy cannot be created or destroyed, and, if we put enough of it together on a very small spot we can use it to manipulate matter and time E=mc2. The Island has a ‘will’ and it works hard to ensure that its plan is on track. Characters in the plot can chose HOW, but the Island ultimately controls ‘WHEN’ and ‘WHAT’. Locke had to die, return to the Island, resurrect, and fulfil a role important to the Island. It was insignificant whether he hung himself, whether Ben strangled him or whether Ben let him go and he was hit by a rampant elephant. The point is that Locke had to die and return and he did. Remember this isn’t the first time that old Lockie escaped the draft. He was shot by Ben, thrown out of a window, shot by Ethan, Strangled by Ben and yet there’s no end to him. The Island likes Locke, and it is not done with him yet!!, now for the interesting question…why? Does he ‘have’ somet! hing that the Island wants?
The island can manipulate ‘matter’ or in other words real life events. It can attract people to it and it does this as a means of executing its will. People who ‘stumble’ upon the island are sometimes driven to try to harness its power, most often they are trying to do this for their own gain. The downside for them is that the island can be a poisoned chalice, if you are not ‘chosen’ by the Island you are likely to be banished or end up fighting for survival. This is what is happening to Ben and Widmore and their little power struggle. The island has a ‘plan’ or a ‘path’ that is relevant to the current time portrayed within the lost series. Within this plan Locke is the centre cog, he is fulfilling a role for the Island, he is the only 815 survivor who has met Jacob and when they were spinning through time he was the only one, besides Faraday, who had a clue of what was happening, remember Richard little pep talk, very convenient.
For the main characters on the Island, there is some common trait linking them together. It might even be a leadership trait. This idea might be supported if you consider that there might some additional hereditary link where the older generation of some of the main characters i.e. fathers, mothers have similar traits and as a result are also involved to some degree with the island but apparently not directly linked to their siblings subsequent involvement!

It is sometimes hard to follow, but my intentions are good!
Thanks.
