Taking an educated guess, and theorizing that the incident, described actively since Season Two, is a paradox in which the same character encounters his past self, hence causing said, "Incident."
We have yet to see what happens when a future self encounters a past self, Charlotte died before she had the possibility to encounter herself as a child—perhaps the Island's way of course correction, or just general prevention. And other small instances, such as Sawyer in the woods with Kate and Claire, were never pressed further, allowing any possibility of Future and Past Sawyer meeting.
I believe something catastrophic could happen if Past and Future selves meet. Yes, I realize this has been overstated to the point of comedy by the movie Back to the Future..... And I believe I have a good theory as to what the Incident is.....
The Incident is when Future Ben meets Past Ben. Something happens, in which the two entities merge, Future Ben gets integrated into Young (Past Ben) and now, just like when Desmond traveled to his future self, Future Ben IS NOW young Ben. This would explain WHY BEN KNOWS EVERYTHING. THIS WOULD EXPLAIN WHY HE WAS SHOCKED WHEN ALEX WAS SHOT, because Ben keeps repeating everything, and things are changing. I believe, again, this is the proposed Incident. The Ben we know will die, with his mind and thoughts entering Young Ben.
And that would explain the Incident, and how Ben knows as much as he does....
