When Locke (Bentham) goes to New York to speak to Walt, his initial intention is to try to convince the boy to come back to the Island. But during their conversation Locke has a change of heart and when question by Abaddon he replies that Walt has "been through enough".
But as we learned in the episode 316 destiny has a funny way of doing what it likes. Depite Locke's failures to convince Sayid, Hurley, Kate and Jack to go back, they still ended up on that flight...
I think Walt also ended up on that flight. We just haven't seen him yet.
Back to Locke's short but sweet converasation with Walt - when Locke mentions Michael on a freighter somewhere near the Island, he conveniently leaves out the bit about the ship having been blown up in a cloud of cheesy pyrotechnics. Walt's face looks slightly thoughtful, as if he's pondering the idea of trying to find his father.
When Locke and Abaddon leave the scene, we see Ben Linus standing there looking very menacing... In the moments following this scene, I think Ben caught up with Walt and managed to convince him that he had a chance to see his father again.
And one way or another, this could have led to Walt ending up getting on the flight, which would mean he is on the Island...
As Walt is also a survivor of the original Oceanic 815 crash, it would make sense that Destiny would give him the same treatment as it has dished out to the Oceanic Six (i.e. ending up on flight 316 despite all intentions to stay on the mainland). Aaron doesn't count because he wasn't born yet, And Desmond doesn't count because he wasn't on the original flight.
