ok, so i´m royaly stoned right now and english is not my native language but i hope this makes sense (it may involve aliens , but they´re optional):
first of all i believe now that locke has been ressurrected, he´s immortal. meaning he doesn´t age and he can´t die. at some point he will be going back in time to an ancient egypt type era on the island where he will be killed by the natives thinking locke is an enemy. but imagine the look on their faces when locke stands up a moment later and there is not a scratch on him. from here on out they regard him as a god and as their leader. they build him a giant statue. but because they have never seen his feet before (he´s wearing shoes) they just assume he has four toes just like they do. they also cannot age (hello, richard alpert) btw, that was the optional alien part, if you don´t like aliens then they are just some ancient extinct human race. locke tells them his name is "john locke", but they never heard such a strange name before, the only name they know that sounds kinda similar is "jacob", so they start calling him jacob. they are all pretty happy and get along ! great but locke/jacob knows that he has to protect the island. that it is special and that one day people will stumble upon it or try to find and exploit it. so he creates smokey (or has him created by his people), builds him a nice temple/doghouse and let´s him fight off all the evil people that come to the island. (that´s why smokey hasn´t attacked locke, he´s his master.) the natives also give locke a nice greenish glowy thing as a gift(yep, the same glow that the donkey wheel emits), he doesn´t know what to do with it, but when he turns it (it has a dial or a ring around it or something) he realizes that he can move time forward and backwards with it. locke knows that one day widmore will find the island and that he (or someone else) will have to move it through time to save it. so he puts the glowy thing inside a wheel (so he can give it a good push and move the island several years through time) and hides it deep beneath the island. the next couple of centuries ! are pure island bliss, the island is happy with locke as it´s! leader, the natives and locke are happy as well (they have like, totally awesome raves every friday night and stuff) and the ocassional intruders ,like the black rock folks, are dealt with by smokey. until:
widmore arrives. we first see him when he meets locke as a 17 year-old. over the next years he learns a lot about the island. he is obsessed with the island and it´s powers and wants it for himself. somehow he manages to turn jacob/locke into a ghost (remember, he can´t be killed), banishes him to jacob´s cabin and makes sure he can´t get out by putting the white powder around the cabin. he also puts up the sonar fences to protect him and his people from smokey. widmore then founds the dharma initiative to explore the special abilities of the island. he doesn´t really care for the island, he wants to exploit it and drain its powers for personal gain. there´s a growing opposition against widmore among the dharma initiative. most of them thinking they came to the island working for a good cause. ben is among them. one day he manages to kill all of widmore´s henchmen in the purge and banishes widmore from the island by tricking him into turning the wheel. ben is now the! new leader of dharma (or what´s left of it) and they continue working on the island for a good cause (curing cancer and stuff). how did ben know of the donkey wheel? jacob told him. i believe that ben someday stumbled upon the cabin and jacob told ben about the wheel and used him to get rid of widmore. in return ben gets to be the new leader of the island and jacob promises that smokey won´t attack the others. of course jacob´s not happy about that but he needs widmore gone and there´s not much he can do being all ghostly and incarcerated. this is also why locke can´t see jacob. it´s not because he´s not special but because he is jacob himself and seeing yourself would be a paradox.
then 815 crashes and locke is back on the island. the island feels the presence of its former leader and wants him back. it loses faith in ben (tumor/"i used to have dreams") and gives those powers back to locke. ben is pissed at first but then he realizes bringing locke back is the only way to save the island from widmore. widmore of course knows that locke came from the future and crashed on the island in a plane. so he is observing him, waiting for him to book a flight so he can tag along (or at least send some of his men) and find the island again. he even sends abbadon to tell locke about the walkabout so that he will finally board a plane. i assume that some of the passengers of 815 were actually team widmore. among them eko, the pilot and every other one who has been eaten by smokey. but one of them was able to send the location of the island back to widmore so that widmore knew where to send the freighter. in the last episode he did exactly the same thing: helping j! ohn go back to the island and making sure some of his people are along for the ride (i assume caesar or ilana).
i swear that all sounded better in my head. Theory by Kiki
