After looking at screen caps for the back of the statue shown in tonight's episode, I've come to the conclusion (shout-out to KeepingPace) that the infamous Four-Toed Statue is of Taweret, the Egyptian god (NOT Anubis).
Some background info of the Taweret, from Wikipedia:
- "Taweret became seen, very early in Egyptian history, as a deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth."
The island seems to have a pregnancy problem of some sort... HM...
- "The counterpart of Apep... Taweret was seen as being the northern sky, the constellation roughly covering the area of present-day Draco, which always lies above the horizon."
Certainly seems to fit the location of the statue on the show; overlooking the horizon from the beach.
- "Taweret was depicted as a hippopotamus, since this is what the constellation most resembled, with the arms and legs of a lioness... with features of a pregnant woman. She was also seen with pendulous breasts, a full pregnant abdomen, and long, straight human hair on her head... On occasion she carried an ankh, the symbol of life."
Hippo ears? Check. Long, straight human hair? Check. Ankh in her hand? Check.
Two questions come to mind. 1) Why were we only shown the backside of the statue? 2) What's the relation with Amy taking the ankh from Paul's neck?
The main purpose of showing the statue seems to be to give us a clue as to the origins of the "Others" -- Egyptians? But to go a little further, I believe there will be a bigger WTF! reveal in the future regarding the statue... they will show that the statue has a pregnant belly! This should finally put all the FTS = Anubis theories to rest and bring light to a much lesser known Egyptian god...
My theory is that either the statue itself allowed the birth of babies on the island or that the statue represented the ability of people to bore children on the island. When the statue was destroyed (something tells me the soon-to-be-coming war is not the first war to take place on the island), babies could no longer be conceived and born on the island and the pregnancy problem starts. Note that when Amy gave birth to her son, she was in possession of an ankh, the one she took from dead Paul, the same ankh depicted in the statue on the island. I believe that the ankh allowed the birth of her baby, and without it, she would have died, just like all the other dead mothers. Call it a leap of faith, if you will, that protected her. The in-house doctor did say that pregnant mothers are sent to the mainland via submarine to have their babies. I'm not 100% sure on this, and correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the ONLY baby to be conceived AND born on the island.
Now comes the crazy assumption, with no backup to support it, but I'm taking my own leap of faith here. I think that Amy's son will turn out to be Jacob. Being as he is the only baby to be conceived and born on the island, under the protection of an Egyptian god no less, is it this baby that is TRULY special?
Let me know what you guys think. Feel free to add things/bash the theory to pieces :)
Couple pictures to compare and decide for yourselves if the statue is indeed the Taweret:
