It is clearly seen that some kind of Egyptian culture has left its mark on the island by all of the ruins that are seen scattered across the island. There are many examples: *The remains of the four toed statue on the shoreline. *Some kind of window shaped structure that is on a hill overlooking the Others fake camp. *A column on a platform in an open field. [Locke's father was tied to it after Ben told Locke he had to kill him] the column is designed to look like a papyrus plant that grows on the Nile; this is how the columns of temples in Egypt look. *The hieroglyphs that appear on the Swan stations count down timer. *The stone door covered in hieroglyphs that is hidden in Bens secret closet, in his house, in the barracks. *The ruins covered in hieroglyphs that the French team went into after the smoke monster.
In the season 2 finale Sayid saw the remnants of a four-toed statue on the islands shoreline. It is a big mystery as to what the statue looked like and how it got there, and now that episode 5x08 LaFleur has aired we know what the statue is of. Right before the very last time shift Sawyers group sees the back view of a colossal statue that is on the islands shore. From this view alone I can most certainly tell that it is a statue of the Egyptian god Horus. Horus is the son of Osiris who is the ruler of the underworld,[the hyroglyphs on the Swan stations counter translate to the Egyptian word for “underworld”]. ##Horus is also the name of the man who was in charge of dharma on the island and he convinced Ben and his father Roger to go to the island. ## The statue has Egyptian clothing on and most importantly, it has an Ankh in each hand. An Ankh is an Egyptian symbol that signifies eternal life, which Richard Alpert apparently has. The precise origin of the symbol remain! s a mystery to Egyptologists, and no single hypothesis has been widely accepted. One of the earliest suggestions of its meanings was from Thomas Inman. [similar to Kelvin Inman, the man who lived in the swan station with Desmond until Desmond killed him.]
Richard Alpert is definatly a very significant character in the show, but very little is known about him other than that he seemingly never ages and that he has been on the island for a very long time. In a season 5 episode Sawyer asks Juliet how long Richard has been there and she answers "Richard Alpert has always been here". He is not the leader of the Others, at least not while Ben is there, but is the go to guy because he has been around for so long. In the episode LaFleur Sawyer jokingly refers to Ricardo as that guy with the eyeliner, but this is significant. In ancient Egyptian culture people especially royalty wore this charcoal outline around their eyes, this symbol is called the wedjat. It is the all seeing eye, which is what Richard acts as. It is also known as the eye of Horus, Horus of course is the god, which the four-toed statue depicts.
On the island the is a separation of others and survivors, in the past there was dharma and the hostiles. This is mirrored in Egypt by the upper and lower kingdoms that were eventually united by pharaoh Menes, [something like this has yet to happen in lost]. A kind of Good vs. Evil. Locke is similar to Horus and Ben is similar to Set [Horus’s enemy]. In ancient Egyptian culture these two gods were always fighting over Egypt[the island] Set controlled upper Egypt [the others] and Horus ruled lower Egypt [the survivors].
