Lost is a TV show. It is created for a wide audience. For all type of people. Scientist and non scientist. I have no knowledge on time traveling. Only basic things and stuff i read.
So I will go with the fact that this show is written for a wide audience. Thus it needs to be simple. So we all can understand what is going on here.
I am in the middle when it comes to this issue.
Whatever happened happened vs No there is new time line
I believe in both. Why? Because show is telling me that. Writers are telling me that.
I believe that Faraday is sort of right. Yes whatever happened happened.
Yes Sawyer was always in 70s and was always La Fleur. He was always head of security.
Juliet was always in the 70s. She always gave birth to Ethan Rom. I assume she will save Ben too (thus his obsession with her).
Sayid was always in the 70s. He always shot Ben. Ben always took the risk for Sayid. He always helped them escape (thus the line What is the use in having friends if you cannot trust them)
Jin was always there to freak out when he learns Sun is somewhere there and thus put Sayid in danger.
Jack was always there. Kate and Hurley, Miles too. I have no idea what is their purpose yet. But I am sure they will show us in time.
I believe Jack will refuse to help little Ben (thus the line: Jack, I want you to want to save my life, because first time in the 70s he didn't want to).
Ben will survive. Because Ben exists in the future.
As far as these things I believe that the rule whatever happened happened is valid. But I strongly believe that the future can be changed. In order to change the future you need to change the past.
but that is not possible according to Danny and his mum.

Dharma initiative wanted to change the numbers, the equation. But they needed time. What if there was only one year left? What then? Year and the whole human race is gone..
Then Losties arrived. 5 of them in 1974. Other 4 in 1977. The one man that really matters here is Daniel Faraday. The scientist.
I think he knows lot more about the island then he is telling us. I think he probably knows that things could be changed. But he will not tell that to Sawyer, Miles or impulsive Jin who just wants Sun back and doesn't see the big picture here. It wont matter if he finds Sun and Daniel fails. None will exist. If he told them that they would do whatever they want. This way he created the order. Very smart thing to do.
His primary objective was to STOP THE PURGE. He and Charlotte disabled the Tempest. Ben tried to stop them. Manipulated Juliet into killing them. Luckily Juliet knew better.
Daniel is back to 70s. Exactly where he wants to be. I don't think he knew he will end up there. I don't think his mother told him that. But I think she knew. Same way she knew where and WHEN Jack will end up but she left that part out. Right? I believe she sacrificed her son for a higher purpose. So, he is back there. He can act. So he left them, Sawyer & Co. and went to Orchid or somewhere where he can be useful. I believe he will cause the time loop. The same time loop he ended up in in 2004. Time loop can provide them enough time to change the equation. Variable. I believe that is exactly what we are about to see. The moment he revels that he was either wrong or was not telling the whole truth. But the fact is that something has to be changed in order to save the humanity. That is exactly what Hanso said.

Ben wants things to be done the way they were. He wanted Sayid to shoot him. He put to much patience in that. I even think those people he killed via Sayid are not Widmore's people. But it is wild speculation. Just my gut.

And I ask myself who never liked Dharma? Benjamin Linus. I think he did everything possible in order to get rid of them. And if they are suppose to come back, DI, he will do everything possible to prevent that.
And I ask myself why would Richard kill the soldiers and not the scientist? They are much easier to get rid of. And then I ask myself why he let them live on the island for years and then decided to kill them all... or most of them. It doesn't make any sense.
He said to Locke that he needed him as a reminder of their higher purpose. What is their higher purpose?
There is no doubt in my mind that something has to be changed. Hanso said it himself. Daniel will too. Part of equation needs to be changed. Is Desmond the key? Who sent Desmond to the island? Who bought Black Rock journal? Who funded Daniel's research? Charles Widmore. I believe he is born on the island. I believe he is related to someone from the Black Rock. This all tells me that he is one of the good guys. But I am not 100% sure. The question of Sayid. Who put him on that plane? Ben or Widmore? Whoever did knew that the truce will be broken.
