*This theory began as a comment to Monika's recent theory. Then it got longer and so i gave it it's special place. I hope it makes you ponder about some things in your life because Lost definitely has that effect on me.*
From the one side we have fatalists, people who believe that future is predetermined and that there is nothing anyone can do that will change it. Whatever happened, happened basically means whatever happens, will happen. Ben is most definitely a fan of this theory.
From the other side, we have people who believe in freedom. Free will and the right to choose your own future. If you believe that it is possible to change the past via time traveling, then that necessarily means that you believe that it is possible by changing the past to alter your future. Desmond is obviously a fan of this theory. Listen to the record he plays in the brilliant opening scene of season 2: "MAKE YOUR OWN KIND OF MUSIC, SING YOUR OWN SPECIAL SONG". Locke also believes in choice. When people ridicule him and take advantage of him, he goes on, he doesn't give up. Locke knows: " MAKE YOUR OWN KIND OF MUSIC EVEN IF NOBODY ELSE SINGS ALONG".
Faraday is quick to say that no one can change the past but upon meeting with young Charlotte he can't allow himself to condemn her willingly just because fate says so. He decides to change his own beliefs. He goes against his own self and tries to RESIST the temptation to talk to her. He wants to choose his and her future. He wants to try to change it for the better.
Sayid Jarrah a physically strong man, a torturer and killer, he says he isn't really like that. In the first season, he doesn't want to torture Sawyer, he tries to resist temptation. In the third season, he doesn't want to kill Mikhail, he tries to resist temptation. In the fifth season, he says that for as long as Nadia was alive, he did in fact resist temptation and live a peaceful life with her as a couple. He tells Ben he isn't who Ben sees him to be.
-Desmond failed to marry Penny. He will probably fail to stay away from the island.
-Locke ended back to the wheelchair more than once. He was fooled by Ben again and again.
-Sayid tried to kill once more.
-Maybe Faraday won't be able to control himself.
But the point here is not to see these people as losers. See them as champions. See them as addicts. They try to escape what they know they aren't. They fall off the wagon again and again. They don't win. But they go on trying because they know that their lives, their future are not written in stone. They hope, they fight their demons, they live. They are champions of life! I believe in them just like they believe in themselves. I believe one day they will prevail.
On the other hand, Ben and the people who are like him are champions of death. Ben is the man behind the curtains and he loves a good puppet show, especially when he's pulling the strings. But watch out because this man is afraid. He wants to go back to island and make sure that everything goes exactly as planned, that there is no deviation in the uniformity of the time loop. After his shooting by Sayid many people compared his situation to the one of Hitler's in the proverbial example of "would you kill Hitler in the past if you had the chance". Even Sayid made us think of that by telling Ilana that Ben was a liar, a killer guilty of nothing less than a genocide. The thing is, Ben has something even more important in common with Hitler: he is all for forceful uniformity. Ben believes that the best ones(meaning himself) should rule over the rest and that no one should question this dominance. After all, it is fate. Then why is he afraid? Why does he rush back to island? Why ! the panicked look when someone like Widmore changes the rules or when he hears of something he doesn't know like Jin being alive? Simply because even Ben knows that whatever happened CAN be changed. And he dreads that. He abhors it. He will try anything to stop it. Because he knows it can go down differently and ruin his whole existence.
Ben keeps fooling, insulting, shooting, killing Locke. And Locke keeps taking it all, falling and then rising again. One day Locke will not fall at all. One day he will stand his ground firmly. And when that happens, Locke's free spirit will have finally won over Ben's forceful rule.
Another thing i want to say is that i am not a scientist. My theory is based on the way i perceive the show. I know that some people who post here know a lot about physics and i find it very interesting reading their take on things. But just like Monika has said in her theory, this show is aired from a national network in prime time for EVERYONE to see. I want to believe that means that the way events are played out will be understandable and relevant for everyone and not just the well-educated in scientific fields.
For closing, read if you want the lovely lyrics of "Make your Own Kind of Music" by the Mamas and the Papas which Desmond told me to dedicate to Eloise Hawking( :-D ) :
Nobody can tell ya
There's only one song worth singing
They may try and sell ya
Cause it hangs them up
To see someone like you
You gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind music
Even if nobody else sings along
It can't be nowhere
The loneliest kind of lonely
It may be
Just to do your thing is the hardest things to do
You gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind music
Even if nobody else sings along
And if you will not take my hand
Then I must be going, I'll understand
You gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind music
Even if nobody else sings along
You gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind music
Even if nobody else sings along
You gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind music
Even if nobody else sings along
