Kate.
Ben riggged up the whole situation with the Lawyer knowing that eventually (at the docks) Kate would realise Ben was behind it all and that would walk away in disgust. This is what Ben wanted.
Hurley.
Ben went into Hurley's house knowing that Sayid would have told Hurley not to trust him. Ben knew that Hurley would turn himself in to the the cops waiting outside his house. This is what Ben wanted.
Sayid.
Ben took extra measures with Sayid, because he knew that Sayid is the man who would eventually shoot his younger self. He had Sayid kill any number of innocent men. And then had him pair up with Hurley (who would slow him down) in the hope that he would eventually get caught and arrested (and therefore unable to return to the island). Again, he waslked away from the docks saying he never wanted to see Ben again... This is what Ben wanted.
Somehow, despite Ben's best efforts, the above 3 still ended up on the plane. I think it is fairly obvious that Widmore made sure of this. And how surprised did Ben look when he saw them all on the plane. I would say that he wasn't best pleased to see them.
Sun.
He never even approached Sun... for all he knew she was still in Korea, and he would have kept it that way. Ben killed Locke before he had even had a chance to visit her. So how did Sun end up on the plane? Well remember that little meeting between her and Widmore? Remember that it was he who provided her with the gun and the whereabouts of Mr. Linus.
The only reason Ben told her that Jin was still alive and agreed to take her to Ms. Hawking was to avoid getting himself shot.
That leaves us with Jack...
If Ben was trying NOT to get the 06 back to the Island, then why was he dragging Jack along on his "mission". Simple... by this point Locke (aka Bentham) had already planted the seed in Jack's head and it would have been to late for Ben to try and change his mind. So Ben just kept him close and made him think he was helping to bring everyone back.
So why go to all this effort to AVOID bringing them back, whilst making it look like he was trying to bring them back. Well he needed to coorporate with Ms Hawking, to find out when the window was and which plane to catch. And she wanted them all, so he had to make it look like he wanted them all aswell. He didn't... If Ben had had his way it would have just been himself and John Locke('s body) on the Ajira flight.
What is the point of all this? Well I think we are being led to beleive that whatever this 'Incident' is, it was caused by the O6 returnees. So this is one reason to avoid their return.
I also think that Ben is trying to AVOID his younger self from wiping out Dharma in the Purge.
But Sayid killed Ben - Surely the Purge is avoided?
No... I don't think young Ben is dead. All Sayid has acheived in shooting him has been to make him EVEN MORE angry, and in the original timeline is was ultimately being shot that planted the seeds of genocide in young Ben's mind.
Old Ben knows this and has had time to think about what he has done... so to make amends he has tried to keep Sayid from retrning to the island, so that his younger self would have never been shot by Sayid. He was hoping that if he had never been shot he would, perhaps, never have grown up into a mass murderer. Theory by Stupot
