So I was reading a theory by Locke4God which completely inspired me to continue with his fundamental research ;) on this theory.
First, remember the ComicCon video where Pierre Chang begged someone in the future (approx 2007, since he said 30 years into the future) to reinstate the Dharma Initiative.
So I always wondered why the "split" on the Ajira 316 flight, and the reasons why certain people ended in 1974, and the rest landed on modern day. It's so simple, when you connect the dots and look at the histories, it's simply sides of the up and coming war.
1974 316'ers are Ben's people, that would be Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sawyer (remember the season two yellow "list?") Juliet (we know Ben brought her), Sayid (Ben's assassin), etc...
2007 316'ers are Widmore's people. That would be Frank (Widmore hires for the freighter), Sun (who went to Widmore after leaving the island telling him they have common interest(s)... John Locke (we know Widmore manipulates all his life to get him to the island), the woman who captured Sayid (bounty hunter for Widmore, capturing Sayid for killing Widmore's guy on the golf course). I'll even go on a limb here and assume that Cesar has Widmore's best interest at heart also from his enormous interest in gathering intel on the old DHARMA Initiative Hydra station, to eventually help rebuild the new D.I. I mean, he's definitely not in there collecting food, sleeping bags and flashlights, he's digging through maps and drawings of the D.I.
It looks like the pieces of the "War that's coming" are lined up, Ben's people in the past versus Widmore's people in the future.
Widmore in 2004-2007 sometime gets a video transmission from Pierre Chang somewhere in 1974-1977 saying to reinstate the DHARMA Initiative! So he sets off to do it. Sun after leaving the island, and assuming her rich and powerful father's company, also gets on the inside of Mr. Paik's dealings (one of which included Widmore and this island). Sun learns of this video also, and after watching it contacts Widmore (we see her meeting with him a few times) about common interests they have. That would be finding the island to restart DHARMA, and to do so meant getting rid of Ben (who at that point she believed was responsible for Jin's death). She believes that Ben is still on the island from her season 4 dealings with Widmore because Ben hasn't visited her yet. This is why she's shocked when he does a few episodes into season 5. But in learning that Jin was still alive, made her completely motivated to get on Widmore's team for good, and on 316, to get back to ! the island. She helps him, he helps her. She is even possibly working with Widmore to finance and set this up, she is pretty wealthy after all. Widmore maipulates or even hire's a team of people to go to 2007 on Ajira 316, which include Cesar, Frank, and teh bounty hunter (I forgot he name from last Wed). Interesting note on Frank. I believed that Widmore set it up for Frank to pilot the original 815 flight, but something we don't know of yet kept him from piloting... was that "something" Ben and his efforts? So the second time around Widmore gets Frank into that cockpit!
So the only problem in the future 2007 316'ers is that now, Ben Linus has infiltrated the Widmore camp. And possibly set it up to all happen this way, where him and Locke end up together in the future. This is so they can thwart Charles Widmore in 2007. And I believe Ben's motive is that he wants to regain favor with Richard and Jacob by informing the Other's of the future D.I. that's coming back and helping them to destroy DHARMA 2.0 all over again before it even get's built. I don't know how the producers are going to explain, with science, the reasons that each camp got split up in time frames, but I'm sure it will have Daniel, Desmond, The Incident, Radzinsky, LSD, and the Donkey Wheel in the equation lol.
It makes sense as to why Ben has given this "destiny" speech to Locke... so that Locke believes that his sole purpose is to protect the island, and that Ben can weasel his way back to Locke every time he tries to kill him. Also every time Locke shows a sign that puts Ben at odds with his own purpose, either a) makes Ben think he's losing favor of Locke to Widmore (mentioning "Hawking") or learning that Jacob is telling John to "help him" in Ben's presence (Ben is not on the island's side anymore) Ben tries to kill him. When John survives, Ben keeps remembering that he knows he can't kill John off permanently, so he goes back to his true manipulating self to re-adjust his song and dance to Locke.
See he is manipulating John to help him destroy the D.I. of the future in "service to the island's wishes." Teaching Locke that protecting the island is getting rid of the D.I. (like the old Locke we know who blew up the remnants of the old D.I. submarine, the flame station, etc...). It's also why both Ben and Widmore have vested interest in Locke. They both know he's special in his supernatural abilities, Ben wants a warrior for the future, who's weak and he can easily manipulate to do so, and Widmore wants a true valiant leader for his people, who has healing abilities, belief in fate and fate, and is a spiritual leader, to help *really* protect the island... from Ben.Theory by matt
