As revealed in the most recent episode, Namaste, we are being led to believe that Ethan's parents were Amy and Horace. This means that if it were not for Sawyer's intervention when he saved Amy from the hostiles during her picnic, Ethan would never have been born. This could mean a number of things.
-Sawyer has the ability to alter the course of time as Faraday said some people can do, i.e. Desmond. If it were not for his heroics, Ethan wouldn't have been born; but if whatever happened happened then Sawyer's gun should have jammed or the bullet would have exploded as it rocketed towards the hostiles.
-Another possibility is Amy already survived in the past some other way. This makes sense considering that Ethan was already born so Sawyer really didn't change anything.
-This is more of a hybrid of different theories I have heard throughout the years. There is a theory that Jack is the only survivor in the culmination of this story and realizes the only way he can save everyone is to go back in time and change the course of events following the plane crash. The biggest clue as to this belief holding water is from the pilot episode. When the series starts, Jack is laying in the jungle, it is dead silent, and in the one corner of the screen there appears to be a black rod of some sort that closely resembles Ben's "weapon" he asked Locke to hold onto at the end of Season 4. The whole opening scene was eerily similar to when the Losties got warped out of flight 316 and we find Jack laying on his back in silence. Could it be that there already was a past where Ethan was not born and the new path of events everyone is on is caused by Jack going through all this for the second time and changing some things along the way.
I know this is all skewed as there are going to be gaps in most theories with the complex rules of time travel that only Daniel Faraday knows at this point. Theory by man with the red shoes
