I believe the hostiles want dead bodies because they/the island have the ability to reserect them. Once reserected they have some extra powers they didnt before such as the ability to manafest anywhere and everywhere. The only way to join the hostiles if not born on the island is to die and reserect. the problem though is once a reserected person is killed, they are dead for good.
When the purge happened there were good and bad people within the Dharma initiative. ben who be friended richard was told to compile a list of only the worthy people to be savied this included Ethan who was born on the Island, His mother Amy/Amelia, Horace GoodSpeed, Goodwin, And a bunch of background characters that worked with ben as a workman such as Tom, and others that lived among the barracks in the future This expains the ruggedness of certain others. They Are not considered part of the hostiles but live in Harmony with them. The Hostiles are those who are born on the island and those that have died once. The dead members of the Dharma initiative were not reserected and all thrown in the mass grave.
As we know Hoace was killed in the Purge but had a gun was found with him this means he prob had prior knowledge this was going to occur.
Living in Harmony the Hostiles and Dharma survivors became friends and some developed relationships. The problem was there were not many woman left except for those who had died. being that they were dead, they could not create new life and inturn died in pregnancy
When the list was made those who were on it were told by Ben. Of course none of the oceanic 6 were on it. Juliete was. She did not want to live if sawyer was not going to be there with her. She denies her free pass and runs off with Saywer to a cave to die in eachothers arms.
