After watching the episodes 'Life and death of Jeremy Bentham' and 'Namaste' ive been thinking about the runway and how the others knew that someone would need to use the runway in the future.
Now the person who i think decided to build the runway is Ben. As we saw at the end of 'Namaste' young Ben meets Sayid. Now what i think is going to happen is that Sayid or maybe even one of the other people on the plane who ended up in 1977 (Jack,Hurley,Kate) will mention to younger Ben how they all got off the island, only to all be on the same plane thats going to land back on the island. This will promt Ben to use his power as the leader of the others to build a Runway knowing that he will be crashing on the island in 30 years time.
Another person who might have spoke to one of the losties is Richard Alpert. As we have seen Sawyer has already spoke to Richard about the jughead bomb, so i think that in the next few episodes sayid will talk to Richard (Thats if sayid does get away from Dharma) and mention the plane.
I could be wrong about both, and like most other things in lost the runway will be a mystery or Jacob just thought that the island was missing something? I hope this is not the case as this is a intresting mystery. Theory by Gimmers
