Desmond is the only main character that could be the child of Amy and Horace. It could also explain why he is 'special'
When Sawyer and co arrive in 1974, Paul has just been killed, and it is quite likely Amy was about to be killed. So perhaps Amy was supposed to die, until time traveling Sawyer pops up and saves her. If it wasn't for time travel, she would not have been alive and there would be no Desmond. You could argue that Sawyer could only have saved her as a direct result as Desmond, as he turned the key, which allowed the freighter to find the island forcing Ben to turn the wheel (Remember Locke's Boon vision in season 3 "Desmond, he's helping himself").
Desmond could also have gained his special properties, by not only being Born on the island, but Conceived on the island too. So far we have only witness them separately, with Aaron and Alex (only born) and Ji Yeon (only conceived) on the island. The Doc in La Fleur says that pregnant women leave the island before they are due to give birth, as they don't have the facilities on the island. So it is likely that the child is the only one to have been born on the island during Dharma times. There could be one exception, Pierre Chang's child, which is likely to be Miles, and we know that he has special abilities.
Its worth pointing out that both Horrace and Amy look very similar to Desmond.
It could also explain how Daniel knows that Desmond is special, and why Daniel chose him as his constant, now they are both in 1977.
How does this fit into Desmond's time line?
Well he joined the monastery in 1995 (making him 18 at the time). He dated Ruth for 6 years ending in 1995 a week before he was due to marry her. So he must have been in Scotland since 1989 (when he would have been 12) Not too far fetched so far...
He then met Penny and was with her for two years before meeting Charles in Flashes Before Your Eyes. But something doesn't add up here, because he was in the Royal Scots in 1996, when The Constant occurred, and he tells Penny to be by the phone on christmas eve in 8 Years time (2004). Can anyone shed any light on this situation?
Then all we know is that he was eventually dishonorably discharged and went to military prison for an unknown length of time. The next we see of him is the events in Live Together, Die Alone (2000-2001) when we learn how he gets to the island.
He crashed on the island around March 2001 (making him 24), three and a half years before flight 815 in Sept 2004 (making him 27). Theory by Fate Found
