Everyone knows that Ben promised Widmore that he would kill his daughter, Penny. So when Desmond stormed out of the Lamp Post station in "316", Ben placed a tracking device on him. Ben finds the boat and kills Penny. Then, Desmond walks in and attacks Ben. ben uses his weapon to fend Desmond off and escape. Penny's death sends Desmond into an outrage. Desmond sees Charles Wodmore at the funeral, where Widmore finds out that Ben followed through on his threat. This allows Desmond and Widmore, former enemies to team up to kill Ben. Desmond reveals to Widmore that he knows of Mrs. hawking's location and that she can find the island.
Then, Desmond returns to LA with widmore's hired guns to find Mrs. Hawking and make her help him return to the island to get revenge. This would make sense since Mrs. hawking has already said that the island is not done with Desmond. Once Desmond returns to the island with Widmore, who has not been to the island for a lonf time, a war begins. The Losties are forced to choose sides. Some losties want to remain neutral (Sun, Jin) and elect to go to the temple. Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid side with ben since he has been loyal to them and has kept them safe since their return. Sawyer, Julier, Faraday, and Miles side with Widmore since they have met the "Past" Widmore. Miles is particulary passionate after learning that Ben killed his dad (Dr. Chang) and kills Ben, marking the end to season 5. Theory by Dan in B-More
