Ajira Airways landing, and possible flashbacks in the next few episodes. No potential spoilers.
This theory explains what happened to Ajira Airways Flight 316 at the end of the episode 316. So if you haven't seen that episode yet, read not further.
The last we saw, the airplane was, to the best of our knowledge, flying over the island, and a flash occurs, landing Jack, Hurley, and Kate in the jungle, and they saw Jin in a Dharma jumpsuit. So I think that, because of the flash, Jack, Kate, and Hurley are all now trapped in the Dharma Initiative Era with Jin, Miles, Faraday, Sawyer, and Juliet. But what about Sun, Ben, dead Locke, Sayid, Frank, and everyone else go? I think that for some reason, everyone else on the flight, including Sun and Sayid, did not experience the flash. For some reason yet to be discovered, it only happened to the three we saw at the end of the episode.
The plane was experiencing a dangerous amount of turbulence right before the flash occurred, so I don’t think it made it safely back to the mainland. I think Frank had to land the plane immediately, so Ben came up and guided him to the Hydra Island, where remember, in season 3, the Others forced Kate and Sawyer to work on a landing strip. The landing strip was never explained to us, and I think that through some sort of time travel, the others were told about the need for a landing strip on that island.
So, in theory, the plane lands moderately safely on Hydra Island, and most if not all of the passengers survive easily. So how are they supposed to get back to the main island? If you remember, in the season 3 episode Not in Portland, Sawyer, Kate, Alex, and Karl sailed back to the main island on outrigger canoes. It’s probably safe to say that there are other canoes on the island, and the passengers take turns using these to cross the ocean safely. (note: It might be possible that the plane DIDN’T make a completely safe landing, and that because of destiny, everyone on board but those major characters in the front, died. But for now, there’s no reason to believe that.) So they use the outriggers to cross to the island and make a new camp on the beach, with supplies, including Ajira Airways water bottles to stay hydrated and fed.
Lets assume this theory is true. then since these survivors, (and Ben, Sun, and crew) for some reason didn’t experience the flash, they never time traveled, and are in the current day. They the outriggers and they have Ajira Airways WATER BOTTLES left over from the plane. This leaves a perfect opening for the scene from "The Little Prince" where Locke's group finds the water bottle and the outriggers and uses the outrigger to paddle across the island. That could possibly have been a flash 3 years into the future, after the airplane landed on the strip. So supposedly, it was some of the other main characters shooting at Locke's group, not knowing that it was their friends they were shooting at.
Besides the fact that it still leaves the question of why only 3 of the main characters experience the flash unanswered, it seems like quite a strong theory to explain some of what is going on. It leaves us potentially with one group in the 70s and one group in the year 2009, which will make room for some conflict as the two groups try to converge. What will happen to Desmond is yet to be seen, but there are other theories about that.
I also think that the next few episodes might be the first this season to have real flashbacks, which will show exactly what happened during the episode 316 that we didn’t see. ( i.e. why Sayid was with the marshal, how Hurley got out of jail and onto the plain, what Kate did with Aaron, what Ben’s final task was, and what happened to Desmond.) Theory by Charlie Hume
