So, here's my idea. We've been getting these clues that time is like a stream and can only go forwards and backwards and is basically not alterable. So, couldn't we conclude that the castaways that crashed on 815 were supposed to crash there because they have some sort of mission to accomplish. They were meant to do something that would save the world.
Now we've seen that on the island they've hidden a bomb that could go off at anytime and due to the type of power that the island has, the exploding bomb could be catastrophic. Now we know what the castaways are supposed to do: stop the bomb from going off. Now if time is not alterable, then everything that has happened is supposed to happen. The island was meant to jump in time, to a time where the castaways had to prevent this bomb from going off.
Unfortunately, not all the castaways made the jump. Why? Because of Desmond's actions. It is mentioned that Desmond is the only one that can change things. Because of his presence, the O6 got off the island. Now, since the O6 never jumped back in time, no one was there who was supposed to stop the bomb from going off. Desmond changed the past and the future of the island. This is why it is so important that Ben the people back as quickly as he can. Now that Locke has "fixed" the donkey wheel, the island is basically on a countdown until someone releashes the power of the bomb: (Widmore?)
Hence, that is why it doesn't matter anymore that Ben needed all the O6 together. Now he has Desmond. It is my guess that the O6 are supposed to save the island from someone making the bomb go off. At the end of the show, Jack will sacrifice himself to save the island by taking the bomb someplace and will be killed. Sawyer and Kate then become "Adam and Eve" and the end of the show will be Jack waking up in the jungle as we saw in the Pilot. This end would be kind of an homage to the Dark Tower series which the writers have professed several time how much they love.
Just a few thoughts. Theory by Belafonte
