This is about some new faces and the set-up for the arc of the second half of season 5.
In "316" there are two unknown passengers in the first class of Ajira flight 316. The first is a presumed U.S. Marshall escorting Sayid on his Flight from LA to Guam. She is around thirty years old, dark hair, fair skin, and she shows her badge at the airport while Sayid is handcuffed next to her. This "New Marshall" is a new mystery, like how did Sayid get into custody so quickly and where was he heading?
My theory is that Ben used his other contacts to alert the U.S. authorities that it was Sayid Jarrah who killed the three men and Ben made his punishment (with the help of Dan Norton, his lawyer) be that he would be deported back to Iraq for his crimes, much like Sawyer on 815 (I'm not alone in this idea). My theory about this new marshall is just a guess. She could be one of Ben's team, helping him gather a stray passenger, or she could be just an innocent Marshall who is now in for a wild ride. Or even weirder, she is a friend of Eloise Hawking who is dying and needs to get to the island for its healing properties in exchange for escorting Sayid.
Now my theory on the unknown male passenger feels more concrete because of his only line of dialogue in the show so far, "My condolences... on losing your friend." He says this to Jack at the counter, much like Sayid did to Jack before 815(My props to those who already pointed this out). So he was listening to Jack's conversation and either was genuinely concerned or he wanted to see Jack's reaction. This actor was the mastermind in Vantage Point with Matthew Fox. I'm guessing he was put on the show to have as many secrets as possible for someone who probably has a similar skill set as Sayid (fighting, mechanics, lie-detection?).
So my theory is that he is an undercover agent for Charles Widmore sent to gather information, disrupt Ben's plans, and pave the way for Widmore's return to the island. This is possible because Widmore has many special minions like Matthew Abaddon who are highly motivated and knowledgable about the 815 passengers. This is definitely possible because Charles Widmore knew where Eloise Hawking was in LA, he funded her son Daniel Faraday's research, and she knew where and when the event window would occur. So she told Widmore and he sent this agent. This explains why she doesn't look surprised when Desmond gives her his message from Daniel, she already knew Desmond was coming thanks to Widmore, and she already had a man on the plane that would protect her son.
This is the plan for the arc of the second half of season 5. In each episode there will be the story of Jack, Kate, and Hurley in the Dharma days and the story of Locke, Ben, Sayid, the new marshall and the new sayid. The outriggers with the Ajira water bottle were probably theirs. They experienced the space/time-flash with Ben, Locke, and Sayid. They landed on the island a while after 815 crashed, they join the others, their backstories are revealed, they shoot at Locke and Company on the outriggers, Sayid falls for the marshall, the new sayid can now finally kill Ben Linus because he is back on the island, Christian is furious that Ben returned, Locke revives and seeks out Richard, the new marshall dies, Sayid blames *****, Cerberus attacks the agent, Ben gets to the Temple and uncovers its secret, and Locke and Jack have one scene together in the season finale where they switch roles as Man of Science and Man of Faith. Jack listens to Christian, he develops his healing gi! ft, and has faith in the island and Locke gets more scientific by developing his parapsychology gift with Richard and Jacob's help.
