This theory proposes that the island was built in the past by the future descendants of wealthy industrialists, perhaps the Shepherds, Widmores, Fords, Paiks and/or Reyes to serve as a fortress that protects their ancestors.
The idea is that, in the future, these wealthy families combine their fortunes to develop a "Manhattan project" to discover time travel. Their motivation could be to manipulate time to make themselves wealthier, or in response to a threat to their survival.
With no expense spared, they eventually find a way to move through time. They build the island to serve as their outpost in the past. The ultimate goal of the island is to place their ancestors (Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Sun, Jin, Penny, Desmond, Hurley, some others) on the island to ensure they can't be killed by competitors from the future, who are also traveling to the past.
Think of it like this: in the future, someone from the families of Paik, Widmore and Shepherd and perhaps Reyes become so wealthy and powerful they can fund time travel research. Time travel could make them even wealthier. As you can imagine, if other people found out about this manipulation, they would be angry, and might wish to nip this problem in the bud. Because the families are so powerful in the future -- untouchable-- their only vulnerability is through their past, through their ancestors.
If you can destroy their ancestors, the Widmores, Sheperds Paiks, etc. will never exist in the future. These wealthy families justifiably fear that people hostile to them and their goals will eventually be able to hijack time technology and send people back in time to wipe them out, by killing their ancestors.
Okay, so, if you are a son or daughter (or great, great, great erc. son/daughter) of Paik, Widmore, Ford, Shepherd or Reyes, what is your counter move? You protect your ancestors. How? By setting up a hidden fortress in the past and "imprisoning" your ancestors there for their own protection. It's like protective custody. How would you do this? You would build a paradise-like island hidden from the world and lost in time. To oversee the project, you might send a project manager back in time, perhaps someone like Richard Alpert, to ensure the safe operation of the time fortress. But what if the Lost island was found? You might build a "panic room" protected by a ruthless guardian. I think the temple may be this panic room and the smoke monster it's ruthless guardian.
Once you had built the fortress, you would place your ancestors inside it so they could breed happily generation upon generation until you were born and could take over the world, fund time travel research, send your agents back in time, build the island, protect your ancestors, etc.
As we've seen, something went wrong with the plan: the island was discovered and briefly, but unsuccessfully, colonized by DHARMA. The island was discovered and colonized by DHARMA who wished to exploit it for their own gain. I don't think they know what the original purpose of the island is. They quickly found the island 'uncolonizable.' This is because Richard Alpert, Smokie and the island intelligence keep trying to serve their purpose -- to get the ancestors to the island and keep them safe there and to _keep all others out_.
The future families who fund and founded the island have amazing means, financial, chronological, and technological, at their disposal. I think they recruit people in different time periods, like Ben, by convincing them that they are special and also convincing them that their mission to serve Jacob is a sacred one. I believe this is the reason for all the religious references and imagery. It is a con. In fact, the purpose of the island is incredibly profane and self-serving. There is nothing inherently special or sacred about the people the island wishes to protect except that their descendants are rich and selfish and want to ensure their own survival. There is also nothing special about the people that the island cons to do it's bidding except that they are gullible and vulnerable.
Poor Ben and Locke are duped into committing terrible atrocities, believing they are working for Good. However, as Desmond suggests, they are merely "pawns." The 'uncolonizability' of the island (except for the chosen) is the reason why no one but "the chosen ones" can reproduce on the island. The island's purpose is to protect only the ancestors of the wealthy and their offspring. All other pregnancies are ended by the island. It is a playground for the ancestors of the rich, alone.
This theory makes me feel especially sorry for people like Ben and Danielle, who accidentally arrive on the island, but who the island doesn't want to protect. I suspect that Ben is under the false impression that the island will protect special people and their offspring, and that he is a special person. However the island is just using him to rid itself of DHARMA, re-secure and re-hide itself. The island is a "fickle bitch" for those who are not ancestors of the wealthy, like Locke and Ben. However, the island is relentless in serving and protecting the ancestors of its founders, people like Sun and Jun, Kate, Claire, Jack, Sawyer and perhaps Walt and others. Getting them on the island, keeping them there, safe, happy and abundant is the priority of all the technology and mythology of the island.
