The main theme in season 5 that Destiny Calls is very similar to the motto of "You have work to do." So this theory tries to explain what "work" the 815 survivors have to do in season 6.
First, we all know that the Oceanic 6 leaving the island was a mistake and they have to get back to the island. But why? What makes these people so important that have to return to a deadly, mysterious, and hidden island? Well, there is the already explained reason that whatever happened in the past happened and the universe course-corrects if anyone tries to change the past. So the Left-behinders will always visit 1952, the Orchid well, Charlotte dies, Jin meets Rousseau, Dharma comes and is purged, and the Oceanic 6 survivors who are meant to return will return.
Now that the past is course-corrected to the present, let us focus on the future. On more than one occasion 815 survivors have been told that they have work to do. Their work has to do with the basic question of the show LOST. Why would a plane full of supposed strangers crash-land on a mysterious island? The first part of the answer is that they are not really strangers because they have many connections to each other in their pasts. As Locke would say, it is more than coincidence that this group came to this island at this time. They were destined to come to island together and they are destined to do a very important task together.
The second part of the answer is that each of them have unique talents and experiences that are needed for the final episodes of the show LOST. Another phrase that supports the individual abilities of the survivors is "Don't tell me what I can't do." In other words, I know that I can do what others think is impossible. These people have been struggling with addiction, crime, guilt, death, and betrayal in their lives before they came to the island. This is the time for their second chance and a mission with great purpose. They will fight, protect, lead, believe, and sacrifice for each other. Their goal is more than claiming land on the island, living forever, or being rich and powerful. It is a quest for their redemption.
So why is it important that they change their lives? To prove that the future hasn't been written yet. (see Back to the Future part 2)
If these passengers hadn't crashed on the island, they would have died in prison (Kate/Sawyer), worked himself to death (Jack), killed himself (Locke), spent his whole life searching for Nadia (Sayid), died while working for Paik (Jin), left Jin and would be alone (Sun), died from heroin overdose (Charlie), etc. So the real work that they have to do is to save themselves and each other from a horrible fate.
Think of it as a longer version of Faraday's explanation of the past. "You can't change the past"... but you can always change your future. What's done is done so you can either give up or learn from it. As Locke said, "I needed that pain to get to where I am now." The survivors needed to have these ordeals so that they can join together and rescue each other from their past in order to save their futures.
I predict that the series finale will not be about the mysterious Jacob, Cerberus, hatches, bombs, or time-travel. It will be about each of them deciding to change who they were before and to become...
