For the longest time now, we've believed that the Swan's Failsafe Key caused the Swan to implode in a singularity, somehow leaving our Losties intact, but taking Desmond's clothes.
This has always struck me as odd. Sure, maybe it was just the Island protecting the people it needs... or maybe it didn't implode. Maybe, like the Island, it didn't disappear in space, but disappeared in time.
Let's look at the similarities of the Orchid and the Swan. Both are protecting/harnessing immense amounts of magnetic activity. Both underground. Both have hidden passages leading to something that makes everything okay should something catastrophic happen. When those fail-safes are activated, both make the same humming sound and make the sky turn white/purple.
I think when Desmond used the fail-safe key, he was turning a mini frozen donkey wheel. He caused the Swan to detach itself from the linear time path, and it's skipping through time like the Island and the Losties now are.
I think this also gives a good explanation for Desmond's flashes sparking up at that particular time. Consider, also, how the Losties are the only ones skipping around in time, and Richard and the Others aren't (apparently). In the same way, the people in the Swan didn't necessarily have to be taken with it, but given Desmond's proximity, like Ben he took a ride through time as well, but because it was on a miniature scale, it was only his mind?Theory by Gatekepa
