Ok, so after reading the extensive comments on my other theory of how Hawkings knew where to find Desmond (Faraday) I've come up with a new theory that I think fits better.
Everything about the initial theory stands, except for one thing; the person who tells Hawkings to stop Desmond is not Future Faraday, but is actually Future Desmond! People pointed out that even Faraday probably wouldn't know EXACTLY where and when Desmond would be. Who else would other than Desmond himself?
Assuming that Desmond will eventually end up back on the Island (he's trying to go back now), I think that Faraday will run into him and convince him he has to contact Hawkings. Even though Desmond knows he could allow himself to marry Penny, Faraday convinces him that doing so will cause huge problems with the time/space continuum
We are left with a touching scene in which Desmond tells Hawkings when and where and how to stop him from trying to marry Penny. Desmond sacrifices his chance at happiness and avoiding the Island entirely for the good of everyone else. What do you guys think about this one? Theory by ivey_driveshaft
