We first learned (in “Meet Kevin Johnson”) about the concept of not being able to die until the island lets you.
This peculiarity of Island Life would explain why Ford “missed” the fleeing “Jones”, despite a couple of close-range shots. It would also explain how Sun was not killed by all those bullets as she fled The Elizabeth and how Ford survived all those bullets during his New Otherton Claire rescue.
It also explains why Ben permitted himself (assuming that’s what happened) to be captured and then shot by Danielle, followed by his interrogations and near-deaths at the hands of Sayid and AL. It also explains his remark to Hugo in “Cabin Fever” about shooting Locke: “I should have realised at the time that [trying to kill Locke by shooting him] was pointless”
The implication is that when someone does die (like Michael (finally) on the Kahana), that their Work is Done. This might explain the seemingly willing acceptance of death by people like Mikhail/Sonic Fence (“Thank you”), Bea/Flame and Tom/Lostie Beach.
So ... why would Danny be upset that Colleen died, and why would Juliet be “tried” (if that’s what that was) over Danny’s death? If they COULD be killed, it was their time. Theory by Roland
