I had a somewhat simple theory on how the Black Rock came to be on the island.
Given the Black Rock's location seemingly in the middle of nowhere on the island - is it crazy to venture a guess, especially seeing the island disappear as the O6 were flying away in the chopper and seeing the ripple waves, that this ship may have just been sailing along a plotted course minding it's own business and just by pure happenstance the island popped up out of the middle of nowhere thus placing the ship directly in the middle of the island.
I mean, the ripple waves created when the island disappeared seemed to being moving inward as if to go down into the ocean (whether that was the case or not, who knows) but in my opinion they were moving inward signifying the island went down, and when in reversal what must go down must come back up thus underneath the Blank Rock as it was sailing along.
And giving the old age, although having no physical signs, of Richard Alpert, is it a far cry to also venture the notion that he may have been the captain of the Black Rock? And upon his exploration of the island after his arrival he could of stumbled upon the great "secret" or "presence" or "smoke monster" or "Jacob" or "what have you making the island so unique" and that is why he, appears to be the most significant person on the island at this particular point.
I am not saying the show revolves around Richard, that would be ridiculous, but his character is undeniably very important and quite possibly, not quite possibly, the key to everything we are blogging about.
That could explain the reason Richard is there in the first place, because he inadvertently discovered the island's secret thus making him the island's protector or guardian by pure coincidence.
I haven't on these "theory" boards read much about on how people believe the Black Rock got there so I took a shot....
