After tonight's episode, I think it's pretty clear that Mrs. Hawking has an incredible amount of knowledge concerning not only the island but also the various time travel issues that suround it...
YOU HEAR ME SPARKES!?!?!
Anybody who thinks that Faraday is the big expert on time travel issues better rewind the tape and watch "316" again. Mrs. Hawking seems to have it all figured out. Not only was she not surprised to see Desmond, she didn't even flinch when told her son needs her help as he is still on the Island. While we haven't seen much of her yet in the series, what we have seen of her clearly shows that her knowledge of the big picture is uncanny. This leads me to believe that she may have a sinister goal at heart. As we have seen, she was on the island as a young woman and seemed to have a relationship with a young Widemore. I'm still not clear as to whether or not she is a "good guy" but regardless, she seems to know a whole lot more of what's really going on here than any of the characters we've seen to date. HELL she even has Ben a little perplexed which makes her A+ in my book.
My guess is that it was her, or indirectly through her, that Hurley was on the Ajira flight and that Kate sought out Jack as well. Loved seeing the symetry of Sayid now being accompanied by a marshal as opposed to Kate this time around. Also, for those who missed it, the man in line behind Jack who gave his sympathy for Jack's loss, was a Republican Guardsman who worked with Sayid before he was captured by the USA in Irak. My guess is that this man either works with Ben or is a Widemore agent who's now infiltrated the island. I guess next week will go a long way in clarifying that.
