Ok. I get that "Whatever happened, happened". But still, the Locke/Richard thing is bothering me:
If Locke hadn't been appointed leader by Ben, he wouldn't have stayed on the island and got stuck in the time-warps.
Had Locke not been caught in the time-warps, he couldn't have told Richard he was the leader and told him to turn up to his birth.
Had Locke not told Richard of his future leadership and birth, Richard wouldn't have even turned up to Locke's birth and got it into his head that Locke is a miraculous being.
Had Richard not got obsessed with Locke, the fully-grown man who disappeared in his tent two years previously, he'd have never tried to run those tests on Locke. Locke failed those tests because he wasn't ever special. He was just a man caught in a time-warp who said the right thing at the right time.
Had Richard not continued being obsessed with Locke and got convinced he really was the leader, he'd never have given Locke Sawyer's file, giving Locke the chance to claim credit over Antony cooper's death.
Had Locke not been given the chance to take credit for his father's death, he'd never have been made leader.
Had Locke not been appointed leader by Ben, he wouldn't have stayed on the island and got stuck in the time-warps.
Had Locke not been caught in the time-warps, he couldn't have told Richard he was the leader and told him to turn up to his birth.
And so on...
You see? Locke wasn't ever special. He was a man who arrogantly stated his leadership to Richard, the event that actually CAUSED his leadership in the first place.
It could have just as easily been Sawyer. Or Miles. Or Daniel.
If Miles had said "Turn up to my birth", the exact same thing would have happened and it would have been he who was tailed by Richard, who would have failed the tests, who would have eventually been helped to succeed by Richard, who would have been made the new leader and stayed on the island and eventually told Richard to turn up to his birth.
Locke isn't special. And by that same tally, Richard isn't that special or in-tune either. He fell for Locke's story hook, line and sinker, and because obsessed with him, the man who disappeared in his tent years before.
Richard sort of realised this at one point and decided to look elsewhere - to Ben. But still, he failed in that as well, because as cunning as Ben is, he was a bit of a dick.
No... Richard has yet to find the real new leader. At some point, he will realise that Locke actually set up his own leadership by playing on Richard's obsession to find a new leader. Unknowingly played, yes, but truth be told - Locke did cause his own leadership.
And once he realises this, he will appoint a new leader - the person who caused the island to fall apart upon his departure for whatever reason. A man who never wanted to be leader but proved to cope admirably, albiet a little stalling along the way: Jack Shephard.
This whole series has been a hero's journey - Jack's. He started out as a surgeon, the same as any in America. And he will end up saving the world. Locke has been painted as mysterious to try and sidetrack us from that, but Jack will emerge the true hero/leader, once Richard realises this. Theory by Andrew Sparkes
