RECAP.
If you had to choose between them, which would you save, the Earth, or the human race?
The report on the Creator’s desk might say “…intelligent species, but civilisations on the planet unable to co-exist, owing to tribal instincts of primary specimens. Recommend urgent reorientation of humans. New gene pool almost complete, derived from Black Rock samples on transdimensional portal land unit...…”
Would an intervention like this sound a bit far fetched? Well, stranger things have happened in Lost, considering the recent time leaps by our heroes. They can time travel, accompanied by their clothes, weapons, compasses and Zodiac boats. But after the time jump at Alpert’s camp, the landscape remained exactly the same, less the tents, unaffected by the forces of nature. Sounds a bit far fetched.
Back to the present…er… future? We know that apparitions of the dead appear to the Lost, and they all seem to be in touch with the bigger picture, after encountering the afterlife. Now they feel compelled to regularly visit the main characters of the show, to offer advice. Their guidance is fairly consistent: work to be done, ask forgiveness, make good, go back, save the island etc. I don’t know about you, but if ghosts kept appearing to me, all saying the same thing, I would start believing them.
Yes, the apparitions could well be the black smoke at work, imitating images scanned from the minds of the Lost. But we have seen apparitions appear away from the island, which either reaffirms them as ghosts, or means that the black smoke can travel. However, it is more likely that the island awakens an ability in the mind to perceive apparitions of the dead. The affected person can now see them on or off island, and only those that the island allows.
There is a high probability, therefore, that the apparitions know which ending is required to save the island, humankind and/or the planet. And the island must play a major part in that salvation, because it controls the apparitions.
The Others also know the purpose of the island, and they are trying to keep the island on course towards the desired ending.
So what is that ending? Cataclysmic and controversial, I hope. My best guess is that the Oceanic Six must return for the human race to survive at all. Either to mend some fractured timeline, or the final pieces in a genetic jigsaw, or both.
But what if the survival of humankind meant saving only those brought to the island, while the rest of the world’s population perished? At some point Jacob may appear to John and reveal the true nature of the island…..
THE LOST TESTAMENT
THE HERESY. REVELATION TO JOHN.
Then Jacob appeared to John, as an apparition. “Help me, John, for I have protected this island in life and death, so that the Chosen can witness the New Beginning. And now you have work to do.” And John was as a blind man praying for the darkness to be stripped away, for he had waited long for this enlightenment.
“In death you will see the true shape of the Universe, the balance of Creation and Destruction, and the flow of time. But I relate to you now the will of the Creator, and speak of the Guardians of this world.”
“This Earth is one of the jewels of the Universe, one of the most important planets for diversity of life, and humans were evolved to have dominion here. Many other races know of the Earth, and understand that which the Creator is trying to achieve. They are permitted to observe.”
And John found he could not speak. A multitude of questions and arguments tangled in his throat. For these revelations were like a heresy against all that he knew. But Jacob continued as if reading the mind of a slow pupil.
“You believe the Creator of the Universe is God only to humans? That the Earth is the only planet of its kind? That humans are destined to rule time and space?” Jacob allowed himself a brief, cynical laugh.
“Listen, John. Guardians watch over the Earth, and other similar worlds. At a safe time, a species is chosen and…changed, so that they evolve faster. Civilisations flourish on that planet, and it is hoped they then learn to live as the Creator intended. United as one to meet the challenges of the Universe, protecting their world against natural destruction, neglect and malevolence. Some have succeeded, and no longer need to be watched over.”
John managed a bewildered and hoarse reply. “Who…..what are the Guardians?”
“Those who placed the artefacts here for the Creator, and prepared the island for the New Beginning. Those who began recruiting the Chosen, long ago.”
Jacob waited while John tried to absorb. “Have humans failed then, Jacob? Surely there is still time for us?”
“Understand that humans have achieved much that pleases the Creator. But you will never live peacefully together, for you are tribal by nature. Distrust of others, and fear of the unknown, shapes your instincts. The weapons that would destroy the Creator’s work have long been prepared. The choice for those who watch over the Earth is simple. Do they act before or after your governments or dictators use these weapons? Should they wait for ordinary people to rise up against their rulers, to save the Earth?”
“Unfortunately people are no longer taught to be righteous, to stand up as one against those who would endanger the planet. Instead, they are pressured to borrow and spend the money which their governments have invented, to revive failing trade. The more they consume, the more the Earth suffers.”
“At the end of a day’s work, tired people do not want to think about the damage to their planet. They seek only the comforts of home, or to be entertained. They become addicted or obsessed by anything that will distract them from the world’s problems. Most of their lives will be spent striving to pay off debt. There will be little time for them to realise the talents they were born with, and few will contribute to the world as they had once hoped.
“Thus the human race stagnates, refusing to adapt for its survival. Civilisation devours people with hopes and ideals, and spits them out old and unfulfilled, of no further use. And now, increasing numbers of broken people roam the streets of towns and cities, without purpose, like debris blown in the uncaring wind.”
“We are already witnessing the beginning of the end. The Usurpers, the enemies of the island, have lost control of the plague with which they intended to hold the world to ransom. For the plague has evolved, and will spread across the Earth. Within four years, billions will die.”
“But, a vaccine, surely we could…”
“Unknown to the Usurpers, the antidote, which they deceived Dharma into making on the island, will now render humans infertile. The survivors of the plague in the outer world will be barren. But on this island, you will witness the Regeneration, the New Beginning. The artefacts are changing those who live here, John. The Creator will soon allow the women of the Chosen to conceive and give birth, but their children will be different.”
