This is an extension of "The Smoke Monster and Jacob are not working together" theory as I've been up thinking about the ramifications of this. You should probably read that theory first. Maybe the editor should combine this with that theory, or whatever.
Assuming that the smoke monster and Jacob are not in league together, Ben is obviously playing both sides. This is why Jacob and the Others have lost their favor with him.
Remember how in the season 3 finale, the Others won't even help Ben when he goes to confront Jack? They also won't help him escape from the barracks in season 4. Why would they totally abandon their storied leader so easily?
Because Ben has been corrupted by the black smoke monster. (Yes, I know the Others do help him escape from Keamy and Widmore's thugs, but again I think that's just because they're working against a common enemy out of pure desperation).
In the Ben centered episode "The man behind the curtain" (late in the third season), Ben is very reluctant to take Locke to see Jacob. Then, when they get to the cabin, Ben acts as though he is talking to Jacob. Locke doesn't believe him. Locke is actually right. Even though there is a real Jacob, Ben has totally been abandoned by him because Ben's in bed with the black smoke monster. Jacob won't even talk to him anymore. That's why Ben is so obsessed with what Jacob says to Locke, "Help me." He even shoots Locke to get that information. Jacob wants to be saved from Ben, who still has a hold over Jacob, since no one else can talk to him.
In season 4, when Christian tells Locke to move the island, Ben won't even go into Jacob's cabin, doesn't even know where it is. How would Ben not know where Jacob's cabin is, anyway?
Ben has not been in contact with Jacob for quite some time now and has been faking it. The Others have caught on and that's why they're so desperate to follow Locke. Because Locke's the only other one who can talk to Jacob. And they have figured out that they are no longer following Jacob's orders, that this is the only way to rectify that.
In the Ben episode in season 4, when he conjurs up the black smoke monster, he is very, very reluctant to do so. Haven't you ever wondered, why didn't Ben just break out the black smoke monster right away? Why did he wait for them to kill all those people, even kill his daughter, before he brought it out? If Jacob and the black smoke monster really are working together, why would he even hesitate?
Because Ben doesn't want anybody to know that he's really on the black smoke monster's side. Not Locke, Hurley, Sawyer, Keamy, and definitely not Charles Widmore. If the Others knew this, they might even kill Ben. It's one of his deepest, darkest secrets. He only brings him out when he's totally desperate, until after Keamy kills his daughter. He says, "They changed the rules." And then he gives this crazed expression. Then he decides to break it out, revealing his true master.
Not only has Ben been deceiving the Lost survivors, he's also been deceiving the Others and Jacob. That's why he has to lie so much.
Haven't you ever wondered why Jacob and the Others abandoned Ben so, so badly? Jacob even gave him cancer. Why would he do that to his own "chosen one"? He's punishing Ben because of his transgressions. At the end of season 4, right before Ben turns the donkey wheel, Ben says, "I hope your happy Jacob." Clearly, he thinks he's being punished.
Jacob is desperate to get Locke, and desperate to get rid of Ben. That's why he had a spinal surgeon come in the crash. It would be a way to bring Locke closer to him. That's also why Jacob cured Locke of his paralysis.
But, I think the reason Jacob's gonna let Locke die is because Aaron is actually going to be the new "chosen one." That's why the black smoke monster doesn't want Aaron to come back, why he gives Kate that dream about how she shouldn't bring him back (said by Claire in her dream in the season 4 finale).
Locke is just a way of releasing Ben's power over Jacob and the Others. Aaron will be the true leader, and bring the Shepard family back together.
When Locke tells Ben, "You're a hypocrite, a pharacy!" Locke is absolutely right, and Ben knows it. I think when we get to another Ben episode, it's going to be about his journey to the "dark side", the side of the black smoke monster.
"I looked into the eye of this island, and it was beautiful," John Locke.
