I've harboured this theory ever since Locke's father was brought to the island by the others to be killed by Locke, but can only now justify it's reasoning.
The others pulled him from a time before he threw Locke out of the window.
If you recall, his old man was not surprised to see Locke walking around instead of being in a wheelchair. And Richard seems bent on making the Locke myth come true. Indeed, to avoid a paradox he would make it a mission. I would even bet that he planted Sawyer on the flight as insurance to make sure he was killed.
In Locke's mind, he could not walk before he came to the island. But just like we saw with Desmond, if an event occurs in the show's timeline then that will implant the new memory from the past that will be available for recall at the 'present' time. What if after Sawyer did the deed then Locke was updated with the new memory, justifying his actions further and making him more determined, as he's acted ever since? Theory by Mark lovin' Lost
