Putting together multiple theories, I can up with one major theory.
Charlotte, Faraday and Miles were all, at one time or another, were all on the island before their trip with the freighter.
Faraday, as we saw in season 5, was working for dharma in the past.
Miles, as has been guessed here, is Chang's son referenced in the first episode.
Charlotte I think is Faraday's daughter. The woman who Faraday worked on looks like Charlotte and maybe she is the mother of Charlotte (Annie?) and Faraday had an affair with her on the island. We don't know how old she would have been when the purge happened. She got off the island when she became pregnant since the island won't allow births.
My ultimate theory is that to get to the island, you need someone who has been to the island before. I've always thought that Christian has a connection to the island before his death. Christian, even his dead body, helped everyone else on the plane get to the island. The freighter was able to get to the island because of Charlotte, Faraday, and Miles.Theory by MZ
