Ok, so a few things Charlotte said while waking up from her time jumps gave me a few ideas about the history of the island. To sum up, I think that Jacob has been crashing boats on the island for thousands of years, I think the first one to crash was full of egyptians, and I think that Richard was on that boat.
So who were the first people to get to the island? As far as we know so far, the folks on the Black Rock. However, Charlotte tells Daniel she became an anthropologist so that she could FIND the island. Why would she be so knowledgeable about ancient cultures (She said she knew more about ancient cultures than Hannibal himself) unless they were somehow related to finding the island?
I think that although the Black Rock was the oldest ship we've seen, there have been many, MANY older ships. I think the first to land on the Island were either the Carthaginians (Hannibal) or the Egyptians (I like this pick).
I think that Jacob has been stuck skipping through time for centuries, maybe even millenniums. And throughout all of history, Jacob has brought different groups to the island in a vain attempt to help him! I think that Richard was in the first group to land on the Island, a group of Egyptians. They were responsible for the hieroglyphics and possibly the four-toed statue. They all died except for Richard, who survived through the years to speak for Jacob and try to bring more people to help.
The Losties are just the last of a long line of ships to crash on the Island! What's more, I think that it will be revealed that Jacob is actually one of the Losties, which would make sense with the initial title of the show "The Circle" and open up a lot of cans of worms concerning time paradoxes.
