I'll keep it simple and you guys can elaborate.
I think the Others are part of an ancient civilization that lived on the Island for thousands of years. Also, the Others seem to be immortal for whatever reason. Widmore, Christian Shepherd, Eloise, etc. were Others who decided to live in the real world and die as mortals.
The UN hires Valenzetti to come up with the equation that predicts the end of the world. They realize this Island is the key to solving the problem. Well, it turns out the purpose of the Others is to use the Island to "Press the Resest Button" on the outside world. In other words, the Others are waiting for humanity to reach its peak, then they take a few citizens from humanity and start over on the Island. Its kind of a Zion (a la Matrix) or Noah's Ark they use to store people while the world ends.
Widmore, Christian, and the Others who left the Island watch these events from the outside world and make sure their children make it onto the Island to survive the End of the World.
Back to the UN trying to solve the Valenzetti equation, Alvar Hanso, with all good intentions, sends the Dharma Initiative to solve the end of the world problem on the Island. However, Benjamin Linus betrays the Dharma Initiative and helps the Others kill the Dharma Initiative.
Here's your first glimpse at two opposing sides, while neither one is necessarily "bad". On the one hand, the Others want to fulfill their purpose and stay on the Island while the outside world is destroyed. The Dharma Initiative/Hanso Foundation wants to discover how to prevent the world from being destroyed. However, Widmore/Eloise/the Others all know if the world doesn't end, then the world AND the Island will be destroyed.
So here is your end-game showdown. I think Ben has been a double-agent for Hanso the whole time. Ben secretly wants to prevent the end of the world, and infiltrated the Others to discover how to. Jacob and the Others want the world to be destroyed and preserve their children (Jack, Claire, etc.) on the Island.
The question is, should the Losties sit on the Island and let the world just end? Perhaps when the world ends, then get "Reset" to the beginning of the ancient civilization and end up being the FOUNDERS of the Others civilization. All making one giant time circle.
