Before you guys start I want to let you know this is out there. The title of this theory refers to the X-men story arc where Shadowcat's mind is sent back in time to prevent the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants from killing the president (or something) and change the future.
I think something similar is going on in Lost. In the not so distant future (maybe 200 years), the factors of the Valenzetti equation will all be met, and it will be the end of the world. I think that before this happened, a group of scientists developed a strategy to change their future and prevent Armageddon. The Island exists in the future as well, and these scientists have harnessed its energies. They decided to send one person back in time (think superman), accompanied by robots, to attempt to change the factors of the Valenzetti equation in the past. Yes, I am saying Richard is a robot, I told you it was out there. I'm not saying Juliet or any Others we have been introduced to are, the robots recruited people throughout the years. I am saying that Richard and the Others we saw attack the helicopter, and maybe even Mikhail are.
The one living person sent back was jacob. The plan they hatched in the future was to remove certain people from the outside world and quarantine them on the Island. By picking just the right people, certain branches of the human population would never exist, certain alleles in the gene pool would be eliminated (resistances to certain diseases and the like) and the factors of the Valenzetti equation will be corrected.
There was one problem with the plan; Jacob didn't count on the fact that he couldn't change the past. In order to prevent any time paradoxes, Jacob is trapped in his cabin, unable to affect the past in any way. The inorganic creatures (robots) however, are not affected by the time energy of the same Island in the same way as Jacob.
This would explain why the others don't time jump. They are unliving robots, and as such they don't have a "consciousness" that can be transported from time to time. They only know what they have saved in their memory (which is why Richard didn't know Locke yet in 1954). They are also programmed to recognize certain objects to allow others to issue them orders (like the compass). The smoke monster is a highly advanced security system, but that's all it is, another robot from the future (god it sounds stupid when I put it in writing).
Why is it guarding the temple? I think all of the necessary people who have already been killed are in there. The smoke monster is protecting them so their DNA can never spread to the outside world.
The scientists developed a list of people who needed to be quarantined on the Island, starting with ancient Egyptians. They sent the Island back, and Jacob's robots began collecting the necessary people to remove from the gene pool, all the way from ancient Egypt to the Black Rock.
The losties were supposed to be the last group of people who were quarantined on the Island. At this point, the Island is supposed to be finished gathering all of the necessary people from the gene pool, and the Tempest station will gas everyone, sealing their bloodlines and saving the future. At this point, Jacob is supposed to turn the donkey wheel, returning the Island to the future.
There was just one problem. Desmond. Even though the Island was actively searching for just the right people to be quarantined, there was still the chance someone it did NOT want quarantined would be there. Desmond threw a monkey wrench in the plans by crashing flight 815. Originally, only the necessary people were supposed to be "flashed" out of 815, like they were "flashed" out of 316. Thanks to Desmond, though, the plane crashed instead, and there were a whole bunch of people on the Island who weren't supposed to be "quarantined"!
We saw in the Lost experience that the valenzetti equation is very precise. Mittelwerk's virus is designed to kill "exactly 1/3 of the population, no more, no less". When flight 815 landed, the plan fell apart because the other people on the flight belonged back in the real world! The 815ers who died on the Island are either the ones who were on jacob's list of people who must be quarantined to save the future or were of so little consequence to the gene pool (IE their bloodline wouldn't last more than maybe one generation) that their death was irrelevant. They can die without affecting the future.
There were, however, a couple of people who ended up on the Island who could not stay there without ruining the plans to fix the Valenzetti equation. Walt is one of these people. He is "special" because he will eventually lead to a huge branch of humanity that is has enhanced mental abilities (the bloodline Jacob eventually descends from), the future scientists want to keep in him in circulation rather than quarantined. Locke is another one of these people. He is meant to spread his genes as well rather than being stuck on the Island.
No one that was quarantined was supposed to leave the Island. Once the 815ers landed, they had to stay there, to let them out into the real world would defeat the point of quarantining them. If they are allowed to go back out into the real world and procreate, they will throw off all the calculations those scientists did in the future! However, the Island couldn't gas everyone because Walt and Locke were still on the Island, and they weren't supposed to be.
The future scientists developed a failsafe just in case someone ended up on the Island that wasn't supposed to be there. The donkey wheel. The scientists made it as simple as possible and with ancient hieroglyphics so that even the simplest people taken to the Island would be able to operate it. If someone doesn't belong there, Jacob's forces will take them to the wheel and escort them off the Island.
The future scientists didn't count on how intelligent 21st century scientists were though! They thought they had sufficiently kept the Island "hidden" by keeping it moving, but someone was clever enough to figure out its existence! The Dharma Initiative then moved to the Island, screwing around with their experiments and generally mucking up Jacob's plan.
Jacob retaliates and destroys the Dharma Initiative by having the smoke monster brainwash certain employees and having them sabotage the sonic fences, resulting in "incidents" where Dharma stations were overtaken. Finally Richard encounters young Ben and convinces him to finish the job. Everything appears to be back on track.
Then some of the people quarantined on the Island get wise to the plan. Namely, Widmore, Hawking, and Ben. They realize they are going to eventually be killed to preserve the future, so they decide to bring Desmond to the Island to mess with Jacob's plan. They bring Desmond by preventing him from buying the ring, having him leave the monastery, and having him join a race around the world. Desmond crashes flight 815, so the plan can't proceed until the important people on the flight get out into the real world (Locke, and Walt).
Michael manages to get Walt off the Island (possibly with Jacob's help). Jacob is very close to getting Locke off of the Island by having him turn the donkey wheel, which Ben knows will result in everyone on the Island being killed because the necessary people will all have been gathered.
Let me explain. I think that the wheel is used to move non-essential personnel off the Island and return the Island to the future with all the essential people. But what if one of the essential people is moved off the Island? The Island will "skip", trying to return to the future but unable to until that necessary person is back on it. So Ben turns the wheel instead, knowing that until he returns, the Island won't have everyone it needs. The oceanic six also escape during this time period, which was not part of Jacob's plan and due to Desmond's interference (he revealed the Island to the outside world).
Why then, do Ben, Hawking, and Widmore want the 06 to go back? They have also figured out the valenzetti equation, and are attempting to find an alternate solution. They are trying to figure out a way to place "PROXIES" for themselves on the Island so that the future will still be saved, but they won't have to die! It seems as though they are working with Jacob and Richard, because Jacob and Richard want the 06 back so they have all the "necessary" people. In reality though, Ben Hawking and Widmore are trying to "solve" the Valenzetti equation in a way that keeps them alive!
Phew! I know that was a long one! Thoughts? Theory by ivey_driveshaft
