Just to be clear this is just speculation, but it's a unifying theory to explain all the strange literary/philosophical connections with characters names.
I think that we have yet to learn the actual name of certain characters. So far it seems like, when someone leaves the island, they need an alias. My theory is that this Alias is somehow code for who they really are, and I think there are a few people who we only know by their Alias at the moment.
This theory concerns people on the Island who have left and returned to the real world at some point. I think that they all had to change their names, but I think the names they chose are hints as to their true identities.
I think that Daniel and Charlotte were both born on the Island. I think they were given different names when they were moved into the real world.
Example: Jeremy Bentham is a code for John Locke because they were both philosophers
Example: Charlotte Staples Lewis (C.S. Lewis) Alice in wonderland? I'm not quite sure why CS lewis was chosen but I'll bet we'll see!
Example: Henry Gale, the man behind the curtain in the wizard of oz, code for Ben
Example: Faraday- famous physicist
Example: Hawkings- Stephen Hawking is another famous physicist who deals with, among other things, time travel and wormholes! Giving Hawkings and Faraday similar code names to imply parentage is a possibility.
Example: Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes' genius nemesis) and Ben's alias at the Tunisian hotel (Thanks to furtiq8)
Maybe Example: Kevin Johnson (michael's alias) retired from the NBA and came back a year later to help with a playoff run? I know, this one is a stretch.

Radzinsky- Edvard Radzinsky (Russian: ?????? ????????????? ??????????) (b. September 29, 1936, Moscow) is a Russian writer, historian and TV personality, author of numerous plays and film scenarios.
Alpert- Richard Alpert (born April 6, 1931), also known as Baba Ram Dass, is a contemporary spiritual teacher who wrote the 1971 bestseller Be Here Now.
Now there is already an extensive lostwiki detailing character's names and literary connections. I went through this list and theorized possible scenarios in which these characters would be given code names. For example, Desmond's father was on the Island and took the code name Hume. Desmond was born off the Island and took his name. This theory supports the possible idea of Rousseau's parents being on the island as well as Locke's just as a heads up.

Boone's father could have been to the Island and forced to change his name when he left. We don't know anything about his dad other than he was rich and Jack let him die to save Sarah.

Locke's Dad could have been on the Island and had to change his name.
* 1.5 De Groot, Hugo
The DeGroots could be offspring of someone who had to leave the Island.

Desmonds parents were on the Island and left? Why not.

Locke's mom had been to the Island. I don't know about this, but she sure seems crazy when he goes to find her. Like, Rousseau crazy.
