I recently rewatched the Season 3 episode Catch 22 and noticed something that I never quite realized before. Desmond becomes a monk under very odd circumstances and tells the story to his former fiance'...
"Yes. I was scared about the wedding. So, I had a few pints too many. I raised my eyes and I asked, 'Am I doing the right thing?' and that's the last thing I remember. When I woke up, I was lying on my back in the street and I looked up and there was this man standing over me, Ruth, and he reached out his hand and he said to me, 'Can I help you, brother?' And the first thing I noticed was the rope tied around his waist and I looked at him and I knew. I knew I was supposed to go with him. I was supposed to leave everything that mattered behind. Sacrifice all of that for a greater calling."
This could very well have been Desmond time traveling. Knowing that this monk is in cahoots with Ms. Hawking I believe he was a pivotal role in molding Desmond into the right man to live in the Swan Station keeping the island hidden and protected. I also think that the monk was once on the island with Ms. Hawking(Whom I am assuming at this point is Ellie in the 50s). The Monk never really wanted Des to be a brother, he just wanted to introduce him to Penny, setting off the entire string of events leading Desmond to the island, All along knowing that Desmond is uniquely special. A power he is not supposed to use. That's why Ms. Hawking lied and told him that NOTHING can be changed... "The Constant" is proof that Desmond changed the past, altering destiny.
"So, as you well know, we have our own test here. A vow of silence that lasts as long as we see fit. This challenges both his patience and his faith. For some, it may last a week. Those we're less sure about, a month. Personally, Desmond, I never thought you'd last. So now I stand corrected. For whatever reason, your path has led you here, and now you're one of us." Welcome, brother." Theory by OkeyTheOther
