a few thoughts...
Richard told Locke that the others had a very specific way of choosing their leaders, and added that the process began at a very young age. We now know that the reason Richard was at the hospital when Locke was born was because Locke had told him when and where to be two years earlier.
This led me to think back to the way Ben came to the island. Or, more importantly, who was present Ben was born. The fact that Horace just happened to be driving by when Ben was born leads me to think that Ben has already gone through the same time jumping thing that Locke and co. are going through now. Yes, I know that Horace was a part of DHARMA and not the others, but we have seen how easily the others can manipulate people into doing their bidding. I think it's possible that Ben being recruited to the island is a direct result of adult Ben telling someone back in time when and where he was going to be born, just as Locke did to Richard.
Although this may seem to be a minor detail at this point in the story, I believe that if this were true, then there were other things that happened back in time that are happening now as well. Using this idea, I think that the island has been in this time loop for many many years, but each time with a different group of people.
