Buckle up guys, I'm going to try to explain the mysterious Benjamin Linus and why he is the reason the island is skipping.
I think that the hatch was connected to the white energy in the center of the island that the flashes seem to emanate from. The energy comes up the well and out, as we saw with Locke. I think that Dharma figured out a way to tap into this energy source, and safely release some of the energy every 108 minutes. As long as the button is pushed, and the energy is released, the white light is not allowed to build up enough power to turn the Island! If you were to try to spin the wheel, nothing would happen.
Since the purge, the button had been pushed consistently by Radzinski, then Kelvin, then Desmond. At this time, Ben did not want them to stop pushing the button, because he is the leader of the others and he speaks for Jacob; he has everything he wants.
I think that soon before the Losties plane crashed originally, Ben learned from Jacob that John Locke was coming to replace him. Ben refused to accept this. The Island retaliated by giving Ben a spinal tumor. Ben, who has the ability to leave the island (as we saw with his passports), is somehow able to determine which flight Jacob is going to bring to the Island: Oceanic 815.
Ben then arranges for Jack to be on the plane. This is key: Jacob didn't bring Jack to the Island. "Shepard wasn't even on Jacob's list". Ben is the one who brought Jack, to operate on his tumor! Fast forward to when Ben first meets the Losties.
At this point, Ben is absolutely hating Locke. He knows Locke is meant to replace him, and he has serious abandonment issues. Ben gets captured on purpose so he will be taken to the Hatch, where he proceeds to screw with Locke's head and try to convince him not to push the button.
Why doesn't Ben want Locke to push the button? As long as Locke is on the Island, he is protected! Remember when Ben shot him? Ben as much as says that Locke can't die while he's on the island. But Ben wants to eliminate Locke since Locke is his replacement!
Lets get back to the purpose of the button. Ben knows that if he can convince Locke to stop pushing the button, the energy will build up on the Island and it will become movable once again! This is why Ben tricks Locke into letting him move the Island; Ben knows that Locke will eventually have to move the island as well to get it to stop skipping! This is all an elaborate plan by Ben to lure Locke into the real world where he can kill him and stage it as a suicide!!
Here are answers to a couple of good response i've heard to my idea.
Why didn't Ben try to stop Desmond or Kelvin from pushing the button? At that point, Ben didn't know Locke was coming to replace him. He felt secure in his power, and didn't have any reason to want to move the island.
Why did Ben enter the numbers himself if he doesn't want them pushed, smart guy? Well, as we saw in Desmond's flashback, the hatch begins to implode; all the metal got sucked towards the middle, the earth was shaking...in essence, it seems like the hatch is NOT where you want to be when the counter runs down. Ben and Locke were trapped by the doors, and would not have been able to escape if Ben hadn't pushed the button. Ben entered the numbers because it would have killed him otherwise. But then he tells Locke he didn't because he still wants the hatch to blow up, just not with him in it!
So that's my explanation of one of the most inexplicable characters ever invented. He's got serious mental problems (but is still a genius), abandonment issues, and he's homicidal towards Locke. Whaddaya think? Theory by ivey_driveshaft
