PLAGUE/ANTIDOTE – Deadly pandemic virus designed by the ambitious Doctor Thomas Werner Mittelwerk, who hijacked Dharma and the Hanso Foundation, and was backed by the Widmore Corporation. Dharma were deceived into testing the virus on the island, where the human immune system easily resisted it. They believed that a vaccine/antidote could be developed from antibodies present in the island’s inhabitants. Mittelwerk rushed experiments in Sri Lanka, to establish the plague, and show that the Hanso Foundation alone could supply the antidote. Unforeseen by Mittelwerk, the antidote prevented subsequent pregnancies from reaching full term. Since the Hostiles’ purge of Dharma, the supply of antidote has been cut off. The plague begins to spread.

USURPERS – Widmore, Mittelwerk, Paik. Those who would introduce the plague and hold the world to ransom with the antidote. They aim to take possession of the island for further exploitation. Widmore was once an ‘Other’ recruit. Escaped the island, or banished from it, after disagreement.
CHOSEN – Others, Hostiles. They are linked to the crew of the Black Rock, and possibly the ‘Ancients’, who marked the artefacts with Egyptian glyphs. They may have been genetically altered by the artefacts, which gave them fantastic immune systems, and longer life. Pregnancies conceived on the island self terminate if the mother remains there during the second trimester. This could be caused by the Dharma vaccine ‘shots’, or by the artefacts.
ARTEFACTS – devices placed on the island by the Creator, long ago. A failsafe for the planet. Supreme technology, misunderstood by Dharma.
SPIRITS – Smoke monsters.

In the world beyond the island, the plague began to cover the Earth. The Lost and Chosen on the island were spared, for the artefacts protected them. So the governments of the outer world at last met as one to put aside their differences, and to fight the plague. But they were too late. And people began to live out their lives as they saw fit, until the plague found them.
And the Creator despaired. For human tribes had failed to unify, to prepare as one for the future. Their greed had threatened life on the Earth, and the Usurpers were hastening the end of humans. And in the outer world, billions died from the plague. But in the Abyss, the Destroyer laughed. For humans had been easy to influence, and the Creator had left too much to chance. The Universe needed absolute and ruthless control. The Earth would belong to the Destroyer, if those under his influence could take the island. For the artefacts can be used to summon both good and evil.
And the Usurpers gave the antidote only to themselves and to those they needed to serve them. Then there was no more, for the island where the antidote was made was beyond their reach.
The servants of the Usurpers had done nothing to prevent their masters from spreading the plague, for they feared to oppose them. These servants shall therefore be called Meek. And they inherited the ruins of the Earth, but although they survived the plague, the Meek were barren.
THE NEW BEGINNING, THE NUMBERS
And the Chosen returned all those named by Jacob to the island. Jacob, Christian, and those of the dead who had stayed to guide the Lost, were allowed to rest. For their work was done.
Then the Creator intervened, to alter the power in the artefacts, and begin the Regeneration. The island was no longer hidden in a vortex of time, and the Spirits created to protect the island were returned to the underworld. And the island became visible in the Great Ocean, far from the wreckage and contamination of civilisation. For the Chosen could now live without fear, and their women could bear children.
On the island at this time lived 15 women of child bearing age. And to each was granted a husband by a council of 4 elders, who ruled the island in accordance with the Book of Laws. The young numbered 8, including Aaron, son of Claire, and Ji Yeon, daughter of Sun. And the number of people on the island was 42. And their offspring shall be called the new humans, immune from the plague. They shall return to the outside world and toil for its restoration.
And the new people of the Earth shall not be unfulfilled as they were in the civilisations of old. Their talents shall be recognised, and harnessed to the common good. To this purpose they shall study the artefacts on the island. Thus they will learn the shape of the Universe, the nature of time, and the value of the Earth. This shall they learn between the age of 16 and 23 years. And they will sense their destiny, and flourish upon the Earth.
The new humans shall live as one civilisation, and no further intervention shall be needed until at least the year 2880 of the old calendar.
The average lifespan of a new human shall be 108 years. And the Meek shall know them from their appearance, for they will seem like giants, and have four toes on each foot.
