For those of us who look into other stories for insight into LOST, How is this for a theory.
What if there are multiple tribes on the island each, with the same leader, Jacob. Just like how Jacob was the father of the 12 tribes of Israel in the bible?
Even though Locke could see/hear Jacob, and he got accepted as the leader of the others, he still remained with the survivors when they got lost in time (as opposed to remaining with the others).
I think this is because he is supposed to stay with the survivors, being their leader of sorts, under the guidance of Jacob (who apparently also guides the others).
Also in the biblical story, each group had a purpose, just as the groups in lost are beginning to show their purposes.
The tribes of Israel also did not get along very well, and battled/killed members of the other tribes frequently.
I believe that in the end, there will be 12 groups through out the islands history... Each with some kind of guidance from Jacob to fulfill their purpose.
Once they have fulfilled their "destiny" they are then killed off and added to the "dead group". This group lives in the true paradise of the island in another time/universe/existence (pick whichever one sounds best) This group also acts and speaks on Jacobs behalf to guide the tribes.Theory by Dangerzone
