Ive been noticing that anyone who dies on is not always dead. Charlie, Anna-Lucia, Libby, Jacks dad, Claire(?) and numerous others! When the plane took off in 2004 and then crashed on the the isalnd- what year did it crash in??
Its oblivious now the whole show is about time travel. The island was never set in a specific time. I think Desmound was keeping a wormhole open by pressing in the numbers in the hatch. That wormhole was always set to the current time.When he never pressed it & the plane crashed onto the island- the wormhole shifted and the plane crashed into an unknown year. I presume the past because off locke and Rose suddenly becoming healthy.
So when someone died on the island they literally "died" in a time BEFORE they were actually born - as a result this persons consciousness is trapped on the island as it has no body.I think the smoke monster is made up of these peoples conscious- moulded into one being.
So are Charlie and the rest off those who died trying to prevent their own deaths happening again by trying to get the oceanic 6 back to the island & change the past?? But how?
Well when they do go back it will be 30 years before the plane crashed and history can be changed- therefore preventing the plane ever crashing and preventing Ben turning the wheel- therefore saving the island:)
